Schumsk ( Ukrainian Шумськ ; Russian Шумск - in Soviet times Шумське Schumske or Russian Шумское Schumskoje , Polish Szumsk ) is a city in western Ukraine about 74 km northeast of the oblast capital Ternopil on the Bilija River (.ілія).

history

The place is mentioned in writing for the first time in 1149 in the Hypatius Chronicle and then until 1793 belonged to the aristocratic republic of Poland-Lithuania in the Voivodeship of Volhynia . With the partitions of Poland , the place fell to the Russian Empire and was in the Volhynia governorate until the end of the First World War .

After the First World War, the place became part of Poland (in the Voivodeship Volhynia , Powiat Krzemieniec , Gmina Szumsk ), during the Second World War it was occupied by the Soviet Union between 1939 and 1941, which made the place the center of the Shumsk Rajon of the same name . After the attack on the Soviet Union in June 1941, it was occupied by Germany until 1944 , this divided the place into the Reichskommissariat Ukraine in the general district Brest-Litowsk / Volhynien-Podolia , district Kremianez .

After the war, the place was added to the Soviet Union . There the city came to the Ukrainian SSR and since 1991 it has been part of today's Ukraine. In 1999, Schumsk was granted town charter and on July 24, 2015, the town became the center of the newly founded township of Schumsk (Шумська міська громада / Schumska miska hromada ).
