Wake on modem

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wake On Modem ( WOM , also WOR / Wake-on-Ring ) is a standard for starting a computer from the "soft-off" state by calling a connected modem .

To be able to use WOM, the modem, motherboard , PC power supply unit and BIOS must support it. A general requirement is that a modem is connected to the computer and that the main board and modem are supplied with standby voltage . If the modem detects the ringing signal on the analog telephone line, it passes it on in a processed form on pin 9 (= ring indicator) of the 9-pin serial interface . If configured, the PC monitors this connection and starts the PC to receive faxes or the answering machine software. With some motherboards, an additional two-pole cable must be connected to the modem, provided the ring detect signal is not connected through the serial interface and cannot be configured.
