Olewsk ( Ukrainian Олевськ ; Russian Олевск ) is a city in the north of the Ukrainian Oblast Zhytomyr with about 10,000 inhabitants (2015) Olewsk is the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name on the river Ubort in the historical region of Polesia .

history

Olevsk is one of the oldest cities in Volhynia and, according to legend, was founded in 977. The place was first mentioned in writing from 1488, and in 1641 it received Magdeburg city rights . Until 1792 it was part of the aristocratic republic of Poland-Lithuania in the Brześć Litewski Voivodeship and in 1792 came to the newly founded Volhynia Governorate as part of the Russian Empire . After the end of the First World War , the place briefly became part of the Second Polish Republic , but after the fighting in March 1920 it came to the newly formed Ukrainian SSR within the Soviet Union and was downgraded to an urban-type settlement . In the summer of 1941 it was occupied by Germany and incorporated into the Reichskommissariat Ukraine (General District Zhitomir). In November 1941 about 500 Jews from Olevsk were deported to Varwariwka and murdered there. In 1944 it was retaken by the Red Army . Olevsk has been part of the independent Ukraine since 1991, and in 2003 it was granted city rights.

On August 11, 2016, the city became the center of the newly founded municipality of Olevsk ( Олевська міська громада Olewska miska hromada ).
