Malyn (Ukrainian Малин ; Russian and Polish Malin ) is a city in the Zhytomyr Oblast in Ukraine on the Irscha River , about 71 kilometers northeast of the Oblast capital Zhytomyr .

The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 981, the history was strongly determined by the Polish noble family Jelce . Until 1793 what was then Malin was under Polish rule and was located in the Kiev Voivodeship and then from 1797 came under Russian rule to the Kiev Governorate . After serfdom was abolished in 1861, industry began to develop in the village.

The national composition of the city's population at that time was characterized by diversity. In addition to the numerically strongest Ukrainians, there were also Poles, Jews, Germans (in Malindorf , today Malyniwka northeast of the city) and Czechs living in and around the town. In the late nineteenth century there were two carpentry shops, four blacksmiths, a steam mill, a brickworks in Malyn, in 1902 the railway from Kovel to Kiev (now the Kovel – Kiev railway ) was opened north of the town .

Today there is a large paper mill in town (Малинська паперова фабрика / Malynska paperowa fabryka). The city was placed under Oblast Administration in 2003, but it is still the capital of Malyn Raion .
