Baraniwka (Ukrainian Баранівка ; Russian Барановка / Baranowka , Polish Baranówka ) is a city in the Zhytomyr Oblast in Ukraine with about 12,500 inhabitants. It is the center of the Baranivka district and is located on the banks of the Sluch River .
history
The place was founded in 1566, in 1938 it was designated an urban-type settlement, since May 17, 2001 it has had city status.
In 1802, the Mezer brothers built a porcelain factory in the village, and it still exists today. In 2010, an asteroid discovered by the Andrushivka Observatory was named after the city: (214487) Baranivka . In the justification for the name, the porcelain manufacture was particularly emphasized.
The large Jewish population in the village (around 23 percent of the total population in 1939) existed until 1941, after which the majority were killed in concentration camps or were able to flee.
