Karl Girardet (born May 3, 1813 in Le Locle ; † April 24, 1871 in Versailles ) was a painter from Switzerland who worked in Paris .

Life

Karl Girardet was the son of the engraver Abraham Girardet , who settled in Paris in 1822, where Karl grew up. There he was a student of Léon Cogniet . He made long trips in Switzerland , Germany , Italy , Spain , Algeria , Egypt and Turkey , from which he brought home landscapes and genre paintings. In some cases he left landscape painting and created actual historical images , such as the painting “Protestants attacked by Catholic soldiers and monks during their devotion” from Le Locle from 1842 shows. Girardet also worked as a book illustrator, as the illustrated editions of the Ariosta and the Histoire du Consulat et de l'Empire attest.
