history

Novhorod-Siwerskyj was founded by some historians after 1044 by Yaroslav the Wise and in 1096 the village was first mentioned in writing. Since 1098 Nowhorod-Siverskyj was the capital of the Severan Principality , which lay on the border with the Cuman territories and served as a buffer zone. In 1185 , Prince Igor's campaign against the Cumans began here , as portrayed in the famous Igor song .

After the destruction by the Mongols in 1239 , the city belonged to the Principality of Brjansk , since 1522 the city belonged to the Grand Duchy of Moscow , later to the Kingdom of Poland and Poland-Lithuania (most recently in the Czernihów Voivodeship ). In 1620 the town received Magdeburg city rights . Since 1667 by the Treaty of Andrussowo , the city was again under Russian rule.

From August 26, 1941 to September 16, 1943, the city was occupied by Wehrmacht troops and then became part of the Ukrainian SSR within the Soviet Union . In 1991, after the fall of the Soviet Union, it became part of the independent Ukraine. Until March 11, 2014, the city was part of the surrounding Novhorod-Siverskyj Raion and has been under oblast administration since then, but is still the administrative seat of the Raion.
