The Russian-Ukrainian border has existed in its current form since the Ukraine's formal declaration of independence on August 24, 1991 by the Verkhovna Rada . It borders on five Russian oblasts and five Ukrainian oblasts .

The border has a total length of 2295 km. The land border accounts for 1974 km, the sea border 321 km. It extends from a point in the Black Sea south of the Kerch Strait , crosses the Sea of ​​Azov and runs to the triangle with Belarus at the village of Senkiwka in the north.

As a result of the Crimean crisis , since 2014 another section of the border between Ukraine and Russian-controlled Crimea has been running along the Isthmus of Perekop and Sywasch , the legal status of which is disputed.

Border security project

The border fortification project was presented on September 3, 2014 by the Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk .

On September 12, 2014, the Ukrainian cabinet approved 100 million hryvnia , and on March 18, 2015, a further 865 million hryvnia to strengthen this border.
