course

The 526 km (another source cites 535 km) long state border begins south of Włodawa at the border triangle Belarus - Poland - Ukraine . From here it runs with the border river Bug in a southerly direction. Shortly after it branches off from the river, it runs in a south-westerly and later in a southerly direction to the Bieszczady , a low mountain range of the Carpathian Mountains , where it meets the San River , which now marks the border until shortly before its source. From here the border runs in a north-westerly direction to the Kremenez mountain , on the summit of which the border triangle Ukraine-Poland- Slovakia is located.

history

The border initially separated the People's Republic of Poland and the Soviet Ukrainian SSR . It was created after the Second World War when Poland moved to the west due to the establishment of the Soviet-Polish border on the Curzon Line at the Conference of Tehran in 1943 and the agreement between the USSR and the Republic of Poland on the Soviet-Polish state border of 1945 . With the Polish-Soviet exchange of territory in 1951, a border correction took place.

After the creation of the Third Polish Republic and the independence of Ukraine after the collapse of the Soviet Union , it is the border between the two states. In the bilateral treaty on good neighbors, friendly relations and cooperation signed in Warsaw by the Polish President Lech Wałęsa and the President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk , the common border was recognized by both states on May 18, 1992.

After Poland became a member of the European Union on May 1, 2004 as part of the EU's eastward expansion , the border is also an external border of the EU .
