Border between Ukraine and Hungary

The border between Ukraine and Hungary is a land border in Eastern Europe . It runs between the west of Ukraine and the north-east of Hungary .

The 136.7 km long state border begins at the border triangle Slovakia- Hungary-Ukraine near the Hungarian town of Záhony on the Tisza , which initially forms the border river to Hungary. The border then deviates from the course of the river, but continues southeast through the Theiss valley until it meets the river again. Shortly before it ends, it leaves the course of the river Tisza again and turns south, where it ends at the border triangle Romania- Ukraine-Hungary.

history

The current demarcation was drawn up after the First World War 1918 after the breakup of Austria-Hungary by an international commission as part of the Hungarian- Czechoslovak border. After the Carpathian Ukraine fell to the Soviet Union after World War II , it became the border between the Soviet Union Republic of the Ukrainian SSR and the Hungarian People's Republic. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, it became the border between Hungary and the now independent Ukraine.

After Hungary became a member of the European Union on May 1, 2004 as part of the EU's eastward expansion , the border is also an external border of the EU .
