The border between Slovakia and Hungary is the 654.8 km long state border between Slovakia in the north and Hungary in the south. A little more than half of it (338.9 km) is at river borders. Both neighboring states are the longest borders with a neighboring state.

course

It generally runs in a west-east direction and begins at the border triangle Austria- Slovakia-Hungary near Deutsch Jahrndorf / Čunovo / Rajka south of Bratislava and reaches the Danube after a few kilometers . The river then forms the border up to the confluence of the Ipeľ / Ipoly at Chľaba / Szob in front of the Danube Bend , first at the oxbow lake south of the canal of the Gabčíkovo hydroelectric power station and from Sap further along the main stream. Then it follows the lower and middle reaches of the Ipeľ / Ipoly to shortly before Lučenec , except for a stretch of about 30 km at Šahy , where the border runs south of the river. It continues over mountain ridges between the Cerová vrchovina mountains in Slovakia and the Cserhát in Hungary, then roughly from the Slaná / Sajó valley through the karst landscape between the Slovak Karst and the Aggtelek Karst . From the Bodva river to the short river border at Hornád / Hernád near Trstené pri Hornáde / Abaújvár , the border runs in a hilly landscape, after which it forms a dividing line between the Slanské vrchy and the Tokaj Mountains . The last section runs right through a foothill of the Great Hungarian Plain and ends at the border triangle Slovakia- Ukraine- Hungary at Čierna nad Tisou / Tschop / Záhony in the middle of the Tisza .

The highest point of the border is on Veľký Milič (Slovak) / Nagy-Milic (895 m) between Slanská Huta and Füzér , the lowest point on the Bodrog River (94 m) between Klin nad Bodrogom and Felsőberecki .

The adjacent administrative units are (from west to east) Bratislavský kraj , Trnavský kraj , Nitriansky kraj , Banskobystrický kraj and Košický kraj in Slovakia and the counties Győr-Moson-Sopron , Komárom-Esztergom , Pest , Nógrád , Borsod-Abaú and Jorsod-Abaú Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg in Hungary.

history

Today's border was almost completely in its present form in 1920 after the Trianon Treaty came into force , which established the Czechoslovak - Hungarian border at that time . In 1924 there was a border correction when the towns of Somoskő and Somoskőújfalu were ceded by Czechoslovakia to Hungary.

The newly drawn border created three divided places, in all cases by a river border:

As a result of the First Vienna Arbitration Award in 1938 and the Slovak-Hungarian War in 1939, the border was revised in favor of Hungary, but reversed in 1945. After the Paris Peace Conference in 1946 , three municipalities ( Jarovce , Rusovce and Čunovo) were added to Czechoslovakia on October 15, 1947 as part of the Bratislava bridgehead . Since then there have been no major changes to the boundary.

The current border with the exact course of the border is regulated by a treaty between Czechoslovakia and Hungary on October 13, 1956 with later changes.
