history
Čierna nad Tisou was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1828 (as part of the town of Čierna ) and was in the Hungarian Semplin County until 1920 and again after the First Vienna Arbitration in 1938-44.
The year 1946 was decisive for the development of the city, when the freight station for the exchange of goods with the Soviet Union (in connection with the change of rail system to the Russian broad-gauge system ) was built here. In 1957 the place was spun off from the municipality of Čierna and in 1969 was finally granted city status.
The place became known worldwide when the meeting of the Soviet leadership with the representatives of the ČSSR leadership took place here in 1968. The Czechoslovak party leadership, headed by Alexander Dubček , was asked to break off the reform process known as the “ Prague Spring ”.
In 1991 the city received its own coat of arms, which depicts a railway wheel in a black field. With the planning of the broad-gauge Košice – Vienna line , the economic future of the city is uncertain, after cargo handling activity has stagnated since the political change in 1989 .
