Slovenské Nové Mesto (Hungarian Újhely , Kisújhely , Szlovákújhely or Tótújhely ) is a small town with around 1000 inhabitants in southeastern Slovakia on the border with Hungary . The municipality is located in the eastern Slovak lowlands below the small mountain Zemplínske vrchy ; it is separated from the Hungarian town of Sátoraljaújhely by the Roňava river . The place has a road and rail border crossing between Slovakia and Hungary.
The municipality is located on the southern edge of the Slovak part of the famous Tokaj wine region . The Tokaj produced here was known as early as the 13th century and was protected by a special law in 1913. Wine cellars with a length of up to 300 m have been excavated in the tuff and sandstone.
Until the signing of the Trianon Peace Treaty in 1920, Slovenské Nové Mesto was a suburb of the Hungarian city of Sátoraljaújhely. In the boundaries they fell to the Czechoslovakia , as the Transcarpathian Czechoslovakia was awarded and the station at the time was the only rail link between Kosice ( Kassa ) and the karpatoukrainischen city Mukachevo ( railway line Košice-Chop lies).
With the First Vienna Arbitration , the city briefly returned to Hungary from 1938 to 1945.
