Nižný žipov (until 1948 Slovak "Uhorsky Žipov"; Hungarian Magyarizsép ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with a population of 1,451 (December 31, 2019), which for Okres Trebišov of, a circle kraj Košický heard. It is part of the traditional Zemplín landscape .

geography

The municipality is located in the south-western part of the Eastern Slovak Lowlands on the right bank of the Chlmec brook ( Ondava river system ). The center of the village lies at an altitude of 126  m nm and is 15 kilometers from Trebišov and 44 kilometers from Košice .

Neighboring municipalities are Čeľovce in the north, Úpor in the east, Stanča and Lastovce in the south and Kuzmice in the west.

The counterpart is Vyšný Žipov in Okres Vranov nad Topľou, about 55 kilometers away .

history

In the 8th and 9th centuries there was a Slavic settlement near the present location.

The place itself was first mentioned in writing in 1221 as Isepu ; other ancient names are Isyp (1287), Isopov (1321), Iseph (1329) and Žipow (1773). Initially, the village belonged to the Isépy family named after the village , and after 1405 also to the Cseley and Doby families . In 1715 there were 14 inhabited and 14 abandoned houses. In 1787 there were 109 houses and 852 inhabitants and in 1828 210 inhabitants and 1546 inhabitants who were employed in agriculture. Many residents took part in the eastern Slovak peasant uprising of 1831. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Széchényi family owned goods in the village.

Until 1918/1919, the place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

population

According to the 2011 census, Nižný Žipov had 1,447 inhabitants, including 1,226 Slovaks, 20 Roma, four Magyars, two Czechs and Ukrainians. 188 residents gave no information in this regard. 905 residents supported the Roman Catholic Church, 247 residents the Greek Catholic Church, 56 residents the Reformed Church, nine residents the Jehovah's Witnesses, six residents the Evangelical Church AB and five residents the Orthodox Church. Eight residents were non-denominational and the denomination of 211 residents was not determined.
