The Ostslowakischer peasant uprising or cholera uprising (Slovak Východoslovenské Roľnícke povstanie ) was a peasant uprising in Slovakia (then in the Kingdom of Hungary ) in 1831 .

In May 1831 the plague spread from Galicia in eastern Slovakia . The subsequent hygiene measures by the authorities triggered an uprising in the ignorant and starving population in the summer, in which 40,000 insurgents were involved. The fact that the harvest of 1830 was bad had caused unrest. Another factor was that the region was overpopulated. The riots first started in Kosice and in a short time they spread to Sáros and Szepes counties . The army was only able to bring the uprising under control in November. Many peasants who participated in the rebellion were killed.

A memorial for the victims was erected near Haniska on Furča Mountain. It was made by the sculptor Jozef Pospíšil and is a listed building.
