Referendum in Ghana 1964

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1964 referendum in Ghana took place from January 23 to 31, 1964. A constitutional amendment should be legitimized with the help of the referendum. At the instigation of President Kwame Nkrumah, the people should strengthen his presidential powers. In addition, a practically one- party system was introduced, making the Convention People's Party , President Nkrumah 's party , the only legal party in Ghana. This referendum created the prerequisites for the one-party parliamentary elections and one-candidate presidential elections of 1965.

A total of 2,776,372 voters voted on the referendum. The referendum was passed with an extremely large majority. No statements can be made about compliance with fair election conditions and the rules of democratic elections.
