Atta-Mills, newly elected President of Ghana in 2008

The first round of the 2008 presidential elections in Ghana took place on December 7, 2008 at the same time as the 2008 parliamentary elections in Ghana . Although polls in October had seen Nana Akufo-Addo , the candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party , well ahead of his greatest competitor, John Atta-Mills of the opposition National Democratic Congress , neither of the two candidates could achieve the necessary 50 percent of the vote. A runoff election therefore had to be held on December 28th. The runoff election resulted in a narrow majority of 50.13% of the vote for John Atta Mills on the basis of 229 of 230 constituencies counted, compared to 49.87% for the government candidate Nana Akufo-Addo. The votes of the missing constituency Tain District in Northern Ghana with 53,000 voters could not be determined due to logistical problems with the ballot boxes. A by-election on December 30, 2008 was necessary here, which, due to the very narrow result, could even have changed the majority.

It was not until January 3, 2009 that Atta Mills' victory was announced with a gap of less than one percent of the votes cast.
