General election in Ghana 1965

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ghanaian parliamentary elections in 1965 took place in Ghana on June 9, 1965 and were sham elections . At that time, only one party was allowed in Ghana, the Convention People's Party (CPP) of President Kwame Nkrumah . The CPP was therefore allowed to participate in the “elections” as the only party.

The elections were the first for Ghana's parliament since independence. Nkrumah's victory in the referendum in Ghana in 1960 , which involved the adoption of the constitution, was seen as a mandate for another term of office for the members of the National Assembly.

All 198 seats in parliament were now taken by members of the CPP who ran for “election” without opposing candidates.

A year later, Nkrumah was overthrown by a coup, the constitution suspended and the multi-party system reintroduced in the next parliamentary elections in 1969 .
