Presidential election in Ghana 1979

The first round of the presidential election in Ghana 1979 took place on June 18, 1979 at the same time as the general election; about five million people were eligible to vote. After no candidate could achieve an absolute majority, a run-off election took place on July 9, 1979 between the two strongest candidates in the first round, Hilla Limann ( People's National Party ) and William Ofori-Atta ( United National Convention ). With around 62 percent of the votes cast, Limann was able to prevail over his competitor; on September 24, 1979, he finally took over the office of President , which he held until his overthrow by the Provisional National Defense Council on December 31, 1981.
