Provisional National Defense Council
Provisional National Defense Council was a military junta in the West African state of Ghana from 1981 to 1992. Fliegerleutnant Jerry John Rawlings seized power in a military coup on December 31, 1981 and overthrew the Limann government under president Hilla Limann .
On the same day the government and the State Council were declared deposed, parliament dissolved, all political parties banned and the 1979 constitution repealed.
The rule of the military junta under Rawlings ended with the introduction of Ghana's fourth constitution with a referendum in Ghana in 1992 . The military ruler Rawlings resigned from office and became the first President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana between 1992 and 2001 ( Rawlings government ).
