Busia government
The Busia government is the government of Ghana between August 31, 1970 and January 13, 1972, named after Prime Minister Kofi Abrefa Busia .
The 1966 ban on political parties was lifted in May 1969 and a new constitution for the Republic of Ghana was promulgated on August 22, 1969. On August 29, 1969, general parliamentary elections were held, in which the Progress Party of Dr. Busia received 59% of all votes.
The Busia government succeeded the military junta of the Presidential Commission , which was established by the National Liberation Council specifically to return the military junta to democracy. The Busia government was based on Ghana's second constitution and, apart from the reign of Kwame Nkrumah from 1957 until the introduction of the first presidential republic in 1960, is the only government period in Ghana in which the office of prime minister was awarded.
Edward Akufo-Addo was President of the Republic of Ghana during the reign of Busia in the Second Republic of Ghana . The President of the Republic of Ghana was elected on August 31, 1970 by an electoral college . The result of the election was:
- Edward Akufo-Addo : 123 votes against
- Edward Asafu-Adjaye : 35 votes
