Philip Edward Archer

Philip Edward Archer (born February 22, 1925 in Tarkwa , Western Region , Ghana ; † May 10, 2002 ) held the office of Chief Justice of Ghana between 1991 and 1995 and was thus chief judge. Archer was the eighth Chief Justice of the independent Ghana in office of ENP Sowah and predecessor of Isaac Kobina Abban .

Archer was born in Abontiakrom, a district of Tarkwas in the Western Region of Ghana. In Sekondi he attended St. Peter's School and later moved to Adisadel College in Cape Coast for higher education . After graduating from high school, Archer went to the University of Nottingham , United Kingdom to begin his law degree in 1953.

Career

In 1957, Archer was admitted to the Supreme Court (England) bar. In the same year he returned to Ghana after the country gained independence. He began his professional career in the office of a registrar-general , was appointed registrar himself in 1959 and was admitted to the legal civil service as a judicial secretary in 1961 .

Because of his excellence, Archer was appointed to the position of Judge of the High Court in 1964 and was appointed Judge of the Accra Supreme Court in 1980 . Archer has been instrumental in the fight against corruption on various disciplinary boards. In 1983 Archer retired from the judiciary and in the same year became chairman of the Law Reform Commission under the military junta of Jerry Rawlings , who had seized power in 1981.

Even before the establishment of the fourth Republic of Ghana, Archer was appointed Chief Justice in 1991 by the military leadership of the Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC) under the leadership of Jerry Rawlings. He held this position until 1995.

Further positions

Archer became Chairman of the Board of Directors of the University of Cape Coast between 1979 and 1983 and a member of the Council of State , a constitutional organ of Ghana's constitution, in 1995 after he left office as Chief Justice.

Honors

Archer was honored with the Order of the Star of Ghana , the state's highest civilian honor, by Rawlings in 2000.
