George Kingsley Acquah

George Kingsley Acquah (born March 6, 1942 in Sekondi , † March 25, 2007 in Accra ) was a Ghanaian lawyer and politician. Acquah was Chief Justice of Ghana and thus served in the highest judicial office until his death .

Childhood, youth, education

Acquah was born in Sekondi in the Western Region . In Cape Coast he attended Adisadel College between 1957 and 1963 for his secondary school.

Acquah taught at Sekondi College for about a year and then went to the University of Ghana in Legon, Accra between 1964 and 1967 . Here he enrolled as a student and graduated with a Bachelor (Hons.) In Philosophy. In 1970, Acquah was awarded the LL.B. (Bachelor) in Law also awarded by the University of Ghana. He completed his training as a lawyer at the Ghana Law School in Accra and was admitted to the bar in 1972.

Career

After completing his law degree, Acquah worked as a lawyer in Cape Coast from 1972 until he was appointed a judge at the High Court in Ho in the Volta region on September 19, 1989 . In 1994 he was appointed Appeal Court Judge to the Court of Appeal and a year later he was appointed to the highest court in Ghana, the Supreme Court, by Jerry Rawlings . In 2003 he was appointed Chief Justice on July 4 by President John Agyekum Kufuor , which he held until his death.

Acquah was the thirteenth Chief Justice of the independent Ghana and the 23rd Chief Justice in the country. He succeeded Edward Kwame Wiredu in office. Acquah is the first Chief Justice in the history of Ghana to have completed his entire training in Ghana.

Honors, positions

In June 2006, Acquah received the highest honor in the state of Ghana with the award of the Star of Ghana ( Order of the Star of Ghana ). Acquah has held various positions and posts in addition to his judicial office. These include the following:

  • Member, Africa Regional Council of the International Planned Parenthood Federation
  • Member of the Council of the Ghana Legal Literacy and Resource Foundation
  • Chairman, Commonwealth Legal Education Association, London
  • Volunteer Advisor to the International Planned Parenthood Federation

  • Lecturer at the Ghana Law School, the law of evidence ( Law of Evidence )

Family, death

Acquah died on March 25, 2007 at the age of 65 at 1:00 a.m. in the military hospital at Military Base 37 in Accra, Ghana, presumably of complications from cancer that had been discovered two years earlier. He left behind his widow Jane Acquah and six children together.
