The University of Ghana is the oldest and largest of the state universities in Ghana . It is located 12 km northeast of Accra in the suburb of Legon . About 24,000 students are enrolled at the university.

history

The university was founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast . Originally the University of Ghana was closely linked to the University of London , which, for example, awarded the academic degrees. With the acquisition of university status on October 1, 1961, it became independent. Initially, the research and teaching focus was on the humanities and social sciences, agriculture and medicine, but was extended to technology-oriented sciences as part of a national educational reform.

Faculties

There are 3 locations; The main campus in Legon has around 21,000 students, the Accra campus 1,800 and the Korle-Bu campus around 840 students. The university consists of the College of Health Sciences and 11 faculties:

  • Administration (including economics)
  • Dentistry

There are also a number of other disciplines, institutes and research centers that are not assigned to a faculty:

  • Specializing in performing arts (theater, music and dance)
  • Institutes of Statistics, African Studies, Adult Education, Medical Research, Population Studies, Public Health, Communication Sciences
  • Centers for Sociopolitical Analysis, Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems, International Relations, African Music and Dance, Tropical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Biotechnology, African Wetlands and Languages.

Origin of foreign students

Of the 779 foreign students enrolled in 2005, 320 came from Nigeria , 264 from the USA , 34 from Liberia , 23 from Canada , between 10 and 20 students each from Benin , Ivory Coast , Great Britain , Norway , Sierra Leone and Togo . Less than 10 students each came from 24 other countries, including 2 from Germany .
