Edward Kwame Wiredu (1934 - January 31, 2008 ) was a leading lawyer and politician in Ghana . Between 2001 and 2003, during the first term of office of President John Agyekum Kufuor, he held the post of Chief Justice of Ghana , the highest legal office in the country and a key constitutional position.

Wiredu followed Isaac Kobina Abban in office on November 9, 2001 at the age of 67 as the tenth Chief Justice since Ghana's independence (as the 22nd Chief Justice overall) in 2001 and was replaced by George Kingsley Acquah on June 20, 2003 . Wiredu had to seek treatment abroad due to a serious illness.

Wiredu is an advocate of the independence of the judiciary in government and parliament. He massively refused to be influenced and interfered with by the executive . In 2002 he came into opposition to the Ministry of Finance, which he accused of undermining the constitutional right to an independent judiciary through a too small budget for the areas of jurisdiction.
