The Willy-Brandt-Platz is a key transport hub in the north of the city center of Bielefeld . The square is named after the SPD politician, foreign minister and later Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt . Before it was renamed after Brandt's death in 1992, the square was called Berliner Platz and until 1957 Düppelplatz .

traffic

Willy-Brandt-Platz is essentially a traffic light-controlled roundabout. The Herford Street leading north from the city center crosses Feilenstraße , Paulusstraße and Herbert-Hinnendahl-Straße leading to the main train station .

Due to numerous accidents - in 2005 there were 126 - the traffic management in the roundabout is a constant point of discussion. The last attempt was made in May 2006 to defuse the focus of the accident with new markings.

In the local public transport of the city of Bielefeld, the square that was an important transfer point for the tram before the construction of the Bielefeld Stadtbahn is no longer relevant today. The main station tram stop is about two hundred meters away on Herbert-Hinnendahl-Straße next to the town hall.

Development

On the lawn of the roundabout there are some flagpoles that are flagged with appropriate flags for current events, such as those of the Arminia Bielefeld football club .

The Bielefeld Stadthalle , which opened in 1991, is located on Willy-Brandt-Platz , in front of the hall is the mirror created by the artist Isa Genzken , a 30 by 20 meter high steel construction. The work of art is intended to provide a framework for the architecture of the town hall when viewed from the city center.

There are also some commercial and residential buildings on the square.
