Urban district structure

In the Middle Ages, the historic city center of Bielefeld consisted of two separate cities, each with its own council and mayor. The original settlement center was the old town around Obernstrasse and Niedernstrasse. From the 13th century was between the old and the new emerging Sparrenburg the Neustadt . In 1520 both were united to one city. Today the entire horseshoe-shaped area of the historic old and new town is colloquially referred to as the old town .

The old town and the adjacent areas around the town hall , Jahnplatz , Kesselbrink and Bahnhofstrasse form the city center. The city center is the preferred shopping district in Bielefeld and the seat of numerous institutions of overall city importance.

To the south-east of the center, on the north slope of the Teutoburg Forest, south of Detmolder Strasse, the composers' quarter joins, which, with its many villas, is one of the city's better residential areas. North of Detmolder Straße is the densely built-up Dürkoppviertel , which borders directly to the east of the old town and is mainly characterized by its narrow streets and its numerous, closely built, colorful old buildings and the stone Dürkopp arches spanning the streets, which connect the buildings on both sides of the street connect, excels. The south-eastern outskirts of the city district around the reservoirs and the Oelmühlenstraße as well as the Walkenmühle belonged to the municipality of Sieker until 1930 and is still called that today.

The extensive residential area between Heeper Straße and Eckendorfer Straße in the north-east of the city district is a traditional working-class district, which is popularly known as the 5th canton . The residential area between Herforder Strasse in the west and north, Walter-Rathenau-Strasse in the east and Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse and Werner-Bock-Strasse in the south is called the Ostmannturmviertel . On both sides of Herford Street and the railway in the north of the district there are extensive industrial and commercial areas, to which another traditional working-class district connects to the northwest of the main train station with the Kamphofviertel . To the west of the city center, between Jöllenbecker Strasse and Wertherstrasse, there is a large old building area, which, due to its location and structure, is an attractive residential area, especially for university members. The center of this district is Siegfriedplatz . To the south of Wertherstraße there is a preferred residential area with Wilhelminian style villas that extend over the northern slope of the Teutoburg Forest.
