The Lutter , also Bielefelder Lutter or Weser-Lutter , name after the State Office for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection NRW Lutterbach , is a 12.1 km long stream in Bielefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany . The Lutter is the right source river of the Westphalian Aa .
geography
The brook rises in Bielefeld's Quelle district in the immediate vicinity of Gütersloher Lutter . The source area with adjoining alder forest is designated as natural monument no. 2.3-103 .
At 3.1 km from the right, the Lutter (Lutterbach) picks up the wind drift, which up to there has already covered a longer stretch of flow than the Lutter (Lutterbach) is overall long. Later, the Lutter (Lutterbach) joins the Johannisbach in Bielefeld just behind the Milser Mühle . The Johannisbach is usually referred to as the Westphalian Aa from its confluence .
history
The Bielefelder Lutter is not of natural origin, but was dug up in 1452 - much to the annoyance of the monks of the Marienfeld Monastery , who feared for their water supply - by the Gütersloher Lutter shortly after the source (the Lutterkolk) and partly diverted to the northeast. The water was fed to the moat between Bielefeld's old and new towns, for which the Bohnenbach and Vossbach brooks, which actually flow through Bielefeld, were not sufficient. This decision was approved by then Count von Ravensberg Gerhard von Jülich and Berg .
This measure laid a foundation for the town's mills, bleaching and spinning mills.
Due to the ongoing pollution by industrial sewage, private use was no longer possible, so that several measures were considered in the 19th century. From 1893 to the beginning of the 20th century, the Lutterbach in Bielefeld was piped. In 2001 the association pro Lutter e. V. , which has set itself the goal of exposing a total of 2.5 kilometers of the Lutterbach in places and leading it through the city center as a more visible stream. The first phase of construction at the Gymnasium am Waldhof was completed in 2004 after a three-month construction period. The underground piping is still in use, however, as only part of the Lutterwasser is conducted above ground and the above-ground flow of the water can be shut off. A further expansion from the tax office to reservoir 1 is planned.
Surname
For a better distinction one speaks of the Bielefelder Lutter of the "Weser-Lutter", because it drains over the Aa and Werre into the Weser , and of the Gütersloher Lutter also of the "Ems-Lutter", since its water flows into the Ems .
The name “Lutter” is a modification of “loud” and comes from Middle High German , where it stands for light, pure, clean, pure . "Lutter" is a common river or stream name, but also occurs in place names, such as Lutterbeck or Lutter am Barenberge . The synonymous “louder” is still used today as an expression, for example a “louder character” or “purified”.
