Gerhard (Jülich-Berg)
Gerhard von Jülich-Berg (* around 1416/17; † August 18, 1475 at Lülsdorf Castle ) had been Count of Ravensberg since 1428 and Duke of Jülich and Berg since 1437 .
Life
Gerhard was the son of Count Wilhelm von Ravensberg and Adelheid von Tecklenburg . He succeeded his father in the county of Ravensberg after his death in 1428. As the heir of his uncle Duke Adolf von Jülich-Berg , he also took over the rule of the duchies of Jülich and Berg in 1437 .
In the Battle of Linnich on November 3, 1444, Gerhard Arnold von Egmond , the Duke of Geldern, defeated . But he renounced the inheritance claim and sold it to the Duke of Burgundy , which ended the long Second War of the Geldrian Succession . In gratitude, he founded the Order of Saint. Hubert , and Order of the horn or Hubertus Orden called.
Shortly after the birth of his son Wilhelm in 1455, Gerhard fell into mental derangement. His wife Sophie von Sachsen-Lauenburg took over the regency.
Gerhard died in 1475 and was buried in Altenberg Cathedral .
