List of natural monuments in Bielefeld

In the area of ​​the city of Bielefeld there are numerous natural monuments , including mostly solitary plants (mostly trees ), groups of trees and other geological natural monuments such as boulders , quarries , springs , dunes , geological outcrops and others. The only cave (the so-called dwarf cave ) in the Bielefeld city area is also a natural monument .

All natural monuments are under special protection and are regularly maintained and examined annually for damage. A building law protection ordinance, which affects all development plans and landscape plans in the city area, should also contribute to the preservation of the monuments. The landscape law of North Rhine-Westphalia is the basis for the designation as a natural monument, according to which individual creations that have scientific, natural history or cultural value enjoy special protection.

For the natural monuments in Bielefeld, the natural monument ordinances from 1972 applied until February 2007. On February 22nd, 2007, the Bielefeld City Council decided to revise these ordinances, and some new natural monuments were added. According to the Natural Monument Ordinance of March 16, 2007, 87 natural monuments in Bielefeld are currently protected in the so-called interior area under building law. This area includes the urban areas for which a development plan exists as well as the contiguous built-up districts. A new regulation came into force in 2017. In addition, there are natural monuments in the outdoor area under building law that are protected according to the three Bielefeld landscape plans.
