List of natural monuments in the Wesel district
In the district of Wesel there are numerous natural monuments . These include special individual trees , groups of trees, avenues , boulders and spring areas that are noticeable due to their rarity and uniqueness, or that are important for reasons of natural, geological and local history. To ensure that they are preserved, they are protected in accordance with Section 22 of the Landscape Act of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (LG NW), which was replaced in 2017 by the State Nature Conservation Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (LNatSchG NRW).
In 2003, a first part of the natural monuments in the Wesel district was placed under protection by the so-called "Interior Ordinance". The other entries have since been made in the landscape plans, for which the district area was divided into seven areas.
The list of natural monuments is not static. In recent years, for example, some of the listed trees had to be felled due to illness or storm damage. For this, some entries have been added that are not yet represented in the current legally valid list. Citizens of the municipalities can suggest potential natural monuments and apply for inclusion in the landscape plan.
The most outstanding natural monument in the Wesel district was the up to 500 year old Kaiser's beech in Schwafheim , which was already under protection in 1938 and felled in 2015. The late poplar near Büderich , an extraordinarily old specimen, is the thickest poplar in Germany and one of the strongest trees in North Rhine-Westphalia. The millennial yew tree in Xanten is one of the oldest natural monuments in the district .
List of natural monuments indoors
On July 17, 2003, the Wesel district protected various objects as natural monuments in 35 entries. The list of natural monuments for indoor areas was issued on the basis of the “Regulatory Authority Ordinance for the Protection of Natural Monuments within the built-up districts and the scope of the development plans in the Wesel district”, or “Indoor Area Ordinance” for short.
