In May 2020, 326 natural monuments were identified in Münster. Most of them are old trees. In addition, some groups of trees, hedges, boulders, ponds and stocks of rare plants are natural monuments.

Regulations

Responsibility and update status of the natural monument designations in Münster are different.

The higher landscape authority of the Münster district government is responsible for the regulatory authority ordinances.

The ordinance on the protection of natural monuments within the built-up districts and the scope of the development plans has been in force since April 2001.
The ordinance on the designation of natural monuments located outside the scope of the development plans and the associated built-up districts was renewed in March 2007.

As the lower nature conservation authority, the Office for Green Areas, Environment and Sustainability of the City of Münster is responsible for the 4 planned landscape plans.

The landscape plan 1: Werse entered into force in 1987. There were 29 amending ordinances by 2020.
The landscape plan 2: Northern Aatal and foothill hill came into force in 1998. There were 7 amending ordinances by 2020.
The landscape plan 3: Roxeler Riedel came into force in 2014. By 2020 there were 2 amending ordinances.
The landscape plan 4: Davert and Hoheward is (as of 2020) in progress.
