The late poplar near Büderich is located in the Büderich district on the left bank of the Rhine in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Wesel, directly on the Rhine dyke. The mighty single tree that shapes the landscape is protected as a natural monument. With a trunk circumference of 8.85 meters, at a height of even more than ten meters, it is the strongest tree in the Rhineland and the thickest poplar in Germany.

The almost 35-meter-high tree, which was probably planted around 1750, is sick and has been severely damaged after having repeatedly suffered serious knockings over the past few decades. The hollow trunk is shaped by a large, characteristic hole. It is uncertain whether the poplar can be preserved in the future.

Location, description and history

The Büdericher poplar is a late poplar. This is the cultivated form Serotina of the Canadian poplar , which is a hybrid of the Canadian black poplar ( Populus deltoides ) and the European black poplar ( Populus nigra ). It is located in the Büderich district of the city of Wesel (Wesel district ), between the villages of Büderich and Perrich . It is located directly on the Rhine dyke in the foreland of the Rhine, northeast of the Pavershof on Perricher Weg. To the northeast it is surrounded by a small grove . It is part of the nature reserve " Rheinaue between Büderich and Perrich ", part of the FFH area " NSG Rheinvorland bei Perrich " ( Natura 2000 number DE-4305-303) and the EU bird sanctuary "VSG Unterer Niederrhein " (Natura 2000 number DE-4203-401).

The origin of the tree is not clear. The Wesel district states that the late poplar is over 250 years old, which suggests that it was planted around 1750 or shortly before. Stefan and Uwe Kühn from the German Tree Archives, in turn, estimated the age at 130 to 180 years, according to which the poplar would have been planted around 1850. It is an unusually old specimen for a poplar.

Due to its age and several storms, several branches of the late poplar have broken off. The most noticeable breaking point is around two meters high, where a large, noticeable hole now marks the trunk. In order to reduce the risk of further massive demolitions, the treetop was severely pruned in 1992 . Nevertheless, the poplar has lost further branches due to storms in recent years. The lowest strong branch now branches off the trunk at a height of about eight meters. The late poplar is affected by a fungal attack , which is why the trunk is completely hollowed out.

Due to its rarity and beauty, the late poplar is protected as a natural monument in the landscape plan of the city of Wesel that came into force in May 2009 with the identification ND 31 .
