In the east, Dornberg borders the Schildesche district , in the southeast on the Gadderbaum district and in the south on the Brackwede district . In the southwest and west, the municipality of Steinhagen and the town of Werther border, both of which belong to the Gütersloh district .

Structure of the city district

The city district includes the only informally delimited districts Großdornberg , Kirchdornberg , Niederdornberg-Deppendorf , Babenhausen , Hoberge-Uerentrup and Schröttinghausen . With an area of 29.06 square kilometers, Dornberg is one of the largest districts in Bielefeld. The population increased by almost 50% in the 1970s and 1980s, mainly due to the new development areas Schürmannshof and Lohmannshof. Due to its proximity to Bielefeld University , many university members live in Dornberg. Due to its location, Hoberge-Uerentrup is one of the preferred residential areas in Bielefeld.

history

Branch of the city administration with a district library

In the Vita Waltgeri the name mons Durinberc appears, in the 12th century also Thornbergen and 1241 Thorenberg .

The name Dornberg is traced back to the Germanic god Thor , meaning mountain of the god Thor. In the Middle Ages this connection became clear in different spellings. In addition to the above, the names Thornberg , Thornbergon and Thornberge are documented.

The name of the city district was taken over from the former Dornberg office, which existed until 1972 and, with the exception of Schröttinghausen, included today's Dornberg districts. Since the Middle Ages the Dornberg parish has formed the parish of Dornberg, the parish of which is today's district of Kirchdornberg.

As part of the municipal reorganization of the Bielefeld area , the municipalities of Babenhausen, Großdornberg, Hoberge-Uerentrup, Kirchdornberg and Niederdornberg-Deppendorf, which belong to the Dornberg district of the Bielefeld district , and most of the Schröttinghausen municipality of the Halle (Westphalia) district became the city of Bielefeld incorporated and assigned to the Dornberg district. The Wolfskuhle, Wellensiek and Babenhausen-Ost areas , which had been incorporated into Bielefeld as early as 1930 , were also taken over from the old town of Bielefeld .

The Dornberg district does not have its own district office. The district administrative tasks are performed by the Bielefeld city administration. A branch of the Bielefeld Citizens' Registration Office is located in Großdornberg at Wertherstrasse 436.

The Dietrich-Bonhoeffer parish with its headquarters on Jakob-Kaiser-Strasse ( Gellershagen ) is emerged from an amalgamation of three municipalities. In 2001, the Bültmanns Hof, Matthäus-Gemeinde and Christusgemeinde congregations joined forces. There are also community offices at Brodhagen and Wellensiek.
