Baranów Sandomierski [ baˈranuf sandɔˈmʲɛrsci ] is a town in the Tarnobrzeski powiat in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship in Poland . It is the seat of the town-and-country municipality of the same name with around 12,000 inhabitants.

Baranów Sandomierski is located around 123 km northeast of Kraków and 13 km southwest of Tarnobrzeg on the Vistula .

history

Baranów Sandomierski Castle

The first written mention of the place goes back to the year 1135, when Bolesław Krzywousty officially founded the place. In 1354 Casimir the Great gave the place city rights under Magdeburg law . In the following time the place developed mainly through the grain trade . Crafts moved into the city at the end of the 16th century. Above all, cloth and shoes were produced. The castle was also built during this period based on the model of the Wawel in Krakow . In 1628 a printing company was established . Around 1770 about 1200 people lived in the place. During the third partition of Poland , Baranów Sandomierski came to Galicia and became part of Austria .

In 1934 the town received its town charter, which had been lost in 1896. The current coat of arms was awarded by the Ministry of the Interior as early as 1933.

On September 8 and 9, 1939 , heavy retreat skirmishes between the Polish army "Kraków" and the German Wehrmacht took place on the bridge over the Vistula . During the German occupation, all of the town's Jewish residents were deported and murdered .

At the end of July 1944, the Red Army built a bridgehead on the Vistula as part of the Lviv-Sandomierz operation . The successful Vistula-Oder operation that brought the Red Army to Germany began on January 12, 1945 . At the end of the Second World War , the city was half destroyed.

From 1975 to 1998 the city was part of the Tarnobrzeg Voivodeship .

Surname

The name Baranów probably goes back to sheep breeding ( Baran in Polish ), which was carried out here in the 12th century.
