Before the German attack on Poland , the airfield was occupied by the Polish Air Force , which had fighter planes stationed here. After the Wehrmacht captured it on September 7, 1939, the Air Force established an air base command between 1939 and 1944. When the attack on the Soviet Union began in 1941, there was a reconnaissance squadron, a liaison squadron and a weather reconnaissance squadron of Air Fleet 4 . This had set up its headquarters here in June / July 1941. It was not until November 1943 that flying units were again occupied when parts of Jagdgeschwader 52 with the Messerschmitt Bf 109G were stationed here. In March / April 1944, transport planes flew the type Junkers Ju 52 / 3m of Transport Squadron 1 and 4 from here to the nearby eastern front.
