The airport Szczecin-Goleniów ( IATA code SZZ , Polish Port Lotniczy Szczecin-Goleniów im.NSZZ SOLIDARNOŚĆ ) is an international airport in Poland .
Geographical location
The airport is located 30 km northeast of Szczecin and five kilometers northeast of Goleniów on state road 3 from Świnoujście (Swinoujscie) to Jakuszyce (Jakobsthal) and state road 6 from Goleniów (Gollnow) to Danzig .
history
Construction of the airport, completed in 1956, began in 1953. It was built as a military airfield with a runway measuring 1,800 m by 45 m including hangars , a workshop, two tank farms and a control tower. In 1957, the 2nd Kraków Fighter Squadron was moved here.
In 1967 the civil airport in Dąbie (Altdamm) was relocated to Stettin-Goleniów, which was now used for civilian purposes on a separate part. From 1976 to 1977 the airport was modernized and the runway was extended to 2500 m. This made the airport the most modern in Poland at the time. The stationing of the fighter squadron ended in 1994.
In 1998 the runway and parking areas for the aircraft were renovated. A year later, the electrical systems were renewed, including the landing and approach lights. In 2001 the new passenger terminal was inaugurated and four years later it was further expanded. In 2004 a new control tower was built.
On May 29, 2013, the single-track airport station Port Lotniczy Szczecin Goleniów was opened, bringing rail travelers from Szczecin and Kołobrzeg directly to the terminal.
