The Edinburgh Airport ( ICAO EGPH , IATA EDI ; Engl. : Edinburgh Airport , also Turnhouse ) is the international passenger airport of the Scottish capital Edinburgh . The airport, operated by GIP , was the sixth largest airport in the UK with over twelve million passengers in 2016 and serves as the base for Flybe , easyJet and Ryanair .

history

RAF turnhouse

Edinburgh Airport emerged from a military airfield . The military airfield went into operation in 1916 as the Turnhouse Aerodrome for the Royal Flying Corps as its northernmost base for air defense.

During the Second World War , the following squadrons were based on the Royal Air Force Station Turnhouse ( RAF Turnhouse for short ) during the Battle of Britain :

  • 603rd Squadron (from May 5, 1940)
  • 141st Squadron (from June 28, 1940)
  • 253rd Squadron (from July 21, 1940)
  • 65th Squadron (from August 28, 1940)
  • 141st Squadron (from August 30, 1940)
  • 1st Squadron (from September 14, 1940)
  • 607th Squadron (from October 10, 1940)

After the end of the war a gradual conversion to a civil traffic airport began. In 1947 the first civil flight connection to the airfield was started with a route to London flown by British European Airways.

Furthermore, the airport was in military hands. In 1952, the existing runway was expanded to 6,000 feet to be suitable for larger aircraft. In 1956, a new terminal was built for civil aviation, which was expanded just five years later due to increasing passenger numbers.

Edinburgh Airport

In 1960 the airport changed from military to civilian hands when the airport was handed over to the British Aviation Department by the Royal Air Force. This incorporated the airport into the British Airport Authority , or BAA for short, in 1971 . In the following years it was expanded significantly, so that in 1977 the new and modern Edinburgh Airport was inaugurated by the Queen. In the decades that followed, the airport was repeatedly expanded and modernized and witnessed the rapid growth in passenger numbers in Europe over the past few decades.

Based on decisions by the British competition authorities, the operator BAA Limited announced its intention to sell Edinburgh Airport in October 2011. In April 2012, it was finally sold to GIP for £ 807 million .

On March 29, 2018, runway 12/30 was closed.

Location and transport links

The airport is located about 13 km west of Edinburgh city center and, in addition to road connections, has also had a connection to the Edinburgh tram since 2014 .

  • Car : The airport is located on the A8 , an important connection road from Glasgow to Edinburgh, and can also be reached via the M90 Motorway coming from Northern Scotland .
  • Bus : The regional bus operator Lothian Buses operates the Airlink 100, a regular round-the-clock shuttle service to Edinburgh Waverley train station in the city center, which can be reached in around 30 minutes.
  • Tram : The airport has been connected to the reopened tram network since 2014.

Although the airport area is framed by two railway lines, the airport itself has no connection to the railway network.

Terminal building

The airport has a two-story terminal . Check-in and the arrival area with baggage claim are located on the ground floor . The security controls and a total of 23 boarding gates , some of which are equipped with passenger boarding bridges , are located on the upper floor . Gates 13 to 23 are located in an extension called the South East Pier, which opened in September 2006 . In addition to retail and duty-free space , there are also several airport lounges on-site, including those from British Airways .

Airlines and Destinations

Edinburgh has connections to numerous regional, national and European destinations, including the Isle of Man , London , Amsterdam , Krakow , Rome and Palma . Intercontinental connections are currently offered by United Airlines to Chicago and Newark , by Air Canada to Toronto and by Hainan Airlines to Beijing . The largest local airlines are Ryanair , easyJet and Flybe , which each have a base here and fly to national and continental destinations. Edinburgh is currently being converted from German-speaking countries directly by easyJet from Hamburg , Munich , Stuttgart , Vienna and Basel , from Eurowings from Cologne / Bonn, from Lufthansa from Frankfurt and seasonally from Düsseldorf , from Jet2.com from Vienna and from Ryanair from Berlin-Schönefeld , Bremen , Frankfurt-Hahn , Hamburg , Memmingen , Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden Airport and Weeze .

Incidents

  • On February 27, 2001, a Short 360 of the British Loganair ( aircraft registration G-BNMT ) suffered a double engine failure shortly after take-off from Edinburgh Airport. The pilots tried in the near Firth of Forth a ditching perform, the aircraft broke. The machine was to be flown to Belfast on behalf of Royal Mail Post and Freight . The cause of the accident was snow in the engine intakes, which had accumulated during the ground time, came off a few seconds after the engine de-icing was switched on and almost completely blocked the air supply. Both pilots, the only occupants, were killed.

Remarks

  1. The former runway 08/26 (southeast of the southern freight apron), which is no longer used as such, is now partly used as a landing and take-off area for helicopters (helipads 1–3)
