Airport lounge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Classic: Lufthansa lounge in Frankfurt
Scandinavian: SAS Lounge in Helsinki

An airport lounge (also: airport lounge or airline lounge ) is a lounge in a large, mostly international airport . Airport lounges only serve a select group of travelers to bridge waiting times. The reason for the offer is an extended service, e.g. B. to bind passengers in the high price segment to an airline . Ultimately, lounges also serve to promote competition among airlines.

Lounges are mainly operated by airlines, but also by credit card companies, rarely by airports and very rarely by hotel chains . The cost of using the services by passengers is usually included in a membership.

Many major airlines and some regional airlines have now set up lounges. Some of the airlines' lounges also have names (as a product line or as an individual lounge).

Equipment, location

The equipment is very different; International standard, however, is a dignified and calm atmosphere with appropriate furnishings (e.g. carpets and armchairs), a wide range of offers and support. Most lounges have small desks, televisions, a large selection of the latest newspapers and magazines, and in some cases even laundry services, prayer rooms , showers , spas , sleeping facilities and drinks. A distinction is sometimes made between arrival and departure lounges. Some airlines operate shared lounges or pay other companies for their use by foreign passengers (especially within the same alliance ).

Departure lounges will, as far as possible within the safety zone in close proximity to the departure gates set up so that the way to the aircraft is as short as possible and the lounge until the start of boarding must be abandoned. However, arrival lounges and some departure lounges are outside the security area.

If you use the lounge of an airline even though you are not its passenger, this proximity is often not given and you have to cover a long distance to get to the aircraft, possibly even change the terminal. This is a major disadvantage of so-called airport lounge programs such as the Priority Pass .

Lately, the services of individual airlines for their best customers have become more and more exclusive: Some airlines offer separate transfers in luxury limousines for their lounge visitors directly to their aircraft. This is especially the case when separate terminal buildings are available for first class passengers or customers with high status, such as the Lufthansa First Class Terminal in Frankfurt . The passengers boarding are visited personally in some lounges, in a small golf cart driven by the terminal and to the aircraft accompanied, such as in the Thai Airways First Lounge at Suvarnabhumi Airport .

Access authorization

Access is granted to passengers who have booked a ticket in a higher class or who have achieved higher status in frequent flyer programs . Within an alliance , passengers from another airline are usually granted access. In smaller airports there is sometimes only one lounge for all passengers, including those of competing companies, for example in Graz. Some lounges require entry fees. Other providers guarantee access to a large number of lounges, for example Diners Club , American Express (Platinum), Regus, uniglobetravel and Priority Pass through an (indirect) fee-based membership .

Some airlines offer different lounge formats ( four with Lufthansa ). In general, it can be said that there are major differences between the individual lounges. Some lounges only offer a modest selection of drinks and a few chairs, while other lounges have the best champagne , wholesome à la carte meals and massage services.
