history

Virgin Blue Boeing 737-400 in 2002

Beginnings

Virgin Australia came into being around the turn of the millennium. The starting shot was given in November 1999 with the announcement by the Virgin Group that it would set up a low-cost airline in Australia . After the announcement, a public tender was organized for the naming, whereupon the company received about 3,200 letters with suggestions. It gained the name Virgin Blue , which was announced in February 2000.

With two Boeing 737-400s from the Belgian sister company Virgin Express , flight operations were to start on August 3, 2000 with flights from Brisbane to Sydney . Due to problems with the approval Virgin Blue could not meet the target date and therefore announced on July 21, 2000 a slight delay in the start of operations. After finally receiving the operating certificate on August 25, 2000, flight operations could commence on August 31, 2000, just under a month after the scheduled date, on the opening route.

In the beginning, the traditional low-cost flight concept was pursued; because until then no low-cost airline had been able to establish itself successfully on the market in Australia .

As planned, Virgin Blue added more used Boeing 737s to its fleet. Shortly after the airline took off, the second route from Brisbane to Melbourne was opened, which was initially operated three times a day, but already five times in the same year. Also in 2000 the frequency between Sydney and Brisbane was increased to eight times a day. On December 7th, Brisbane – Adelaide was added to the flight schedule for the third time, initially with two flights a day.

At the end of 2000, a total of well over 200,000 passengers had flown with Virgin Blue. The airline achieved an average load factor of 78 percent. The fleet consisted of five Boeing 737-400s. In addition, ten new Boeing 737NGs were ordered for further expansion and joined the fleet in April 2001.

In 2001, the route network was further expanded and routes outside of Brisbane Airport were added.

In May, the first 737-700 ordered directly from Boeing went into service. In connection with this, Virgin Blue added the Melbourne – Adelaide route to its program on May 17th.

Virgin Blue generated operating income of half a million Australian dollars for the fiscal year ended August 31, 2000 through March 31, 2001 . The overall balance sheet fell into the red due to one-off expenses associated with the establishment, so that the bottom line was a loss of A $ 11 million. Nevertheless, the company was able to penetrate very quickly into the profit zone; so the month of December 2000, only four months after the start of operations, was already linked with profits. In June, Virgin Blue welcomed its one millionth passenger. In July, two new connections between Canberra and Brisbane and Sydney and Melbourne went into operation. The Melbourne to Sydney route is the busiest route in all of Australia. The New Zealand company Air New Zealand showed interest in Virgin Blue and wanted to take it over for $ 250 million. The offer was officially rejected on September 4th.

Advancement through the end of Ansett Australia

On September 14th, Ansett Australia ceased operations due to massive financial problems and the effects of September 11th . Ansett was at that time the second largest Australian airline after Qantas Airways . As a result, there were only a few domestic flights left. Virgin Blue took this opportunity to expand its route network and to use the capacities that had become available at the airports. She also took over several former Golden Wing lounges from Ansett Australia's bankruptcy estate. Virgin Blue changed their name to The Blue Room and operated them from then on as paid lounges with an entrance fee of A $ 5 . After Ansett Australia ended, Virgin Blue offered discounted tickets to former Ansett passengers. At that time, Virgin Blue flew a total of nine routes and served seven destinations. With the loss of Ansett Australia after Qantas Airways, it became the second largest Australian airline.

In this half-year, which ended on September 30, 2001, Virgin Australia was able to generate a profit of 8.2 million A $, which means that it was in the profit zone with now more than 1500 employees. In mid-October 2001, Virgin Blue welcomed its two millionth passenger. It now carried 10,000 passengers a day and the fleet was less than four years old. On October 31, the destination Mackay in Queensland was newly added from Brisbane.

On December 9th, new routes followed from Melbourne and Adelaide to Perth, which were served by the first Boeing 737-800s delivered to Virgin Blue from December 9th . In 2001 other routes followed, to Gold Coast, Canberra, Launceston, Brisbane and Cairns. In addition, the frequencies were increased on many existing routes.

Little by little one distanced oneself from the cheap flight model. This also included the introduction of transfer connections from February 2002.

Patrick Corporation joins the company

Virgin Blue had already announced in November 2001 that it was looking for a buyer for a 49% stake in the low-cost airline. In addition, other parts of the company should be sold later on the stock exchange. The first interested party became known to the Lang Corporation , which only a few days after the announcement made the offer to take over half of the airline, which was later rejected.

In March 2002 it was announced that half of the airline's stake would be sold to Patrick Corporation . It had offered a price of A $ 260 million for 49% of the shares . The IPO, in which more shares should be sold, was scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2002; however, the appointment could not be kept. Meanwhile, in April 2002, the ten millionth passenger since flight operations began.

The company also grew in 2002 and 2003. While the fleet consisted of a total of 16 Boeing 737s at the time the entry declaration was signed by Patrick Corporation , it grew by a further seven Boeing aircraft in 2002. As a result, a total of nine additional destinations can be added and frequencies increased in all territories of Australia . In January 2003, ten Boeing 737-800s with 40 options on all models of the 737NG were ordered. The ten firmly ordered aircraft were delivered from August 2003; the 40 options joined the fleet within the next decade.

initial public offering

Pacific Blue Boeing 737-800

In September 2003 the British Virgin Group and the Australian Patrick Corporation agreed on the initial public offering of Virgin Blue. Virgin Blue Holdings went public on December 8, 2003, and is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange . The share of the Virgin Group fell through the IPO. While she planned to keep the share at 29.1 percent, her share fell to just 25.1 percent on December 8th due to the good market price. The Patrick Group was already half of it, but increased its stake and invested another $ 137 million in shares, making it the majority shareholder. Further company shares were sold to various private investors. According to Virgin Blue, 94 percent of its own workforce, around 250 institutions and many thousands of individual investors had shown interest in Virgin Blue shares by December 5th. At the time of the IPO, Virgin Blue's share of domestic Australian traffic was already 30 percent.

In 2004 one entered the international aviation business with the subsidiary Pacific Blue, founded in 2003 . It was to fly to destinations in Australia from its hubs in New Zealand . The painting was largely similar to that of Virgin Blue. The lack of the Virgin name was due to the fact that Singapore Airlines had acquired a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic and had assured itself that there would be no other international airline that listened to a Virgin name. In addition to the New Zealand traffic, Pacific Blue started flights to the Pacific Islands with Boeing 737-800s from September 2004.

In April 2004, the 20 millionth passenger flew with Virgin Blue. The fleet now comprised 44 aircraft serving 41 routes; about 3,250 employees worked for the low-cost airline, which achieved a punctuality rate of 93 percent. Because of the now very large fleet, Virgin Blue decided to build its own maintenance center in Brisbane. The groundbreaking took place in January 2005.

In 2005, the third airline was created under the umbrella of Virgin Blue Holding: Polynesian Blue . It is a joint venture between Virgin Blue Holdings and the Samoa government . Both owned 49% of the airline each, the remaining two percent was in the hands of an independent legal entity in Samoa. The project was announced in July 2005.

A frequent flyer program called Velocity Frequent Flyer (formerly Velocity Rewards ) was also introduced in November . In 2006 the pay lounge The Blue Room was redesigned. The price for a single visit had now risen to A $ 30, but annual passes continued to be offered.

Change to a network airline

Boeing 777-300ER of V Australia

In early November 2006, Virgin Blue ordered three Embraer 170s and eleven Embraer 190s with options for six more aircraft. When the E-Jets were ordered, an aircraft type other than the Boeing 737 was ordered for the first time .

In the first half of 2007, Virgin Blue introduced a CO 2 compensation program. In September, the first Embraer 170 was handed over to Virgin Blue. The first Embraer 190 followed in early 2008. At the end of 2007, the Australian regional airline Skywest Airlines joined the frequent flyer program Velocity Rewards.

In February 2008, Virgin Blue ordered additional e-jets so that, including the three Embraer 170s that had already been delivered, they now held a total of six Embraer 170s and 18 Embraer 190s.

In early 2008, Virgin Blue introduced the premium economy class. In addition to the larger seats, it is characterized by an expanded range of services. In addition, due to the growing number of e-jets in the Virgin Blue fleet, it was decided to expand its own training center, which was previously limited to Boeing 737s, and bought two simulators for Embraer e-jets and Boeing 777.

At the end of 2008, the newly founded subsidiary V Australia started its flight operations with the Boeing 777-300ER, primarily to destinations in the USA . An independent operating license was only issued on February 17th, 2009.

Due to the ongoing global economic crisis , Virgin Blue had to shut down some aircraft in 2009 and reduce capacity on the Australian domestic market. In early 2010, Virgin Blue signed a declaration with Boeing for the purchase of up to 105 additional Boeing 737s, with 50 firmly ordered and negotiated for the remaining purchase options. The first machines joined the fleet in mid-2011. The planes were primarily to decommission older machines from the same series, but also to allow further growth.

In May 2010, John Borghetti was named Virgin Blue's new Chief Executive Officer . He replaced Brett Gedfrey, who had headed the airline since its inception and had previously announced that he would be leaving. John Borghetti had previously run Virgin Blue's largest competitor, Qantas Airways .

At the end of 2010, Virgin Blue took over sponsorship of the Gold Coast Suns football club for an initial three years . At the beginning of 2011 this was recognized with a special painting on a Boeing 737-800.

In February 2011 it was announced that the six Embraer 170s in Virgin Blue's fleet would be replaced by ATR 72-500s . A total of 18 regional aircraft joined the fleet in the following years, with the first replacing the six Embraer 170s and the following being used for expansion in the regional market. However, the ATR 72-500 are not operated by Virgin Blue, but by Skywest Airlines . In addition, Air New Zealand acquired 14.9% of the shares in the company in the first quarter of 2011 for 145 million Australian dollars.

Established as Virgin Australia

Virgin Australia's Boeing 737-800 the day after the renaming

In the spring of 2011, Virgin Blue Holdings underwent a major reorganization. With the consent of Singapore Airlines , Virgin Blue, Pacific Blue and V Australia were merged to form Virgin Australia and a new corporate identity and business class were introduced . Polynesian Blue, which was not owned by the holding company, was renamed Virgin Samoa out of consideration for the partner , but was given an aligned color scheme like Virgin Australia.

At the start of Virgin Australia at the beginning of May, a first new Airbus A330-200 was taken over, which shuttles between Eastern and Western Australia together with the sister aircraft that are about to be delivered . The second step took place on December 7th, when Virgin Pacific and V Australia were integrated into Virgin Australia and disappeared from the market as independent airlines; However, the operating licenses of the two as subsidiaries remain unaffected, with V Australia now officially bears the name Virgin Australia International while Pacific Blue appears as Virgin Australia NZ . At the same time, Virgin Blue Holdings was renamed as the parent company to Virgin Australia Holdings .

During the COVID-19 pandemic , the airline filed for bankruptcy on April 21, 2020 . On June 26th, 2020 it was announced that Bain Capital is acquiring Virgin Australia. Bain Capital plans to downsize the airline.

Destinations

Virgin Australia flies to numerous destinations within Australia from its three hubs . Internationally, the South Sea islands as well as Asia , the United Arab Emirates and the USA are served.
