Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (formerly Skywest Airlines ) is an Australian regional airline based in Perth and based at Perth Airport . It is a subsidiary of Virgin Australia Holdings Ltd. and a sister company of Virgin Australia Airlines . The Virgin Group holds 8.7% of Virgin Australia Holdings.
history
Virgin Australia Regional Airlines emerged from Carnarvon Air Taxi, founded in 1963 . Renamed Skywest Airlines in 1972 , the company received an order from the customs authorities to monitor the coastline. The order could easily be combined with a liner service. Skywest gradually took over several micro-airlines and their routes and aircraft. The resulting fleet of up to 15 aircraft types was reduced to two, the Fokker 50 and 100 , at the end of the 1980s .
The company was sold several times and was owned by CaptiveVision Capital from Singapore and the Avion Group from Iceland until 2013 . As part of a cooperation with Virgin Australia , Skywest uses their frequent flyer program Velocity and has operated several ATR 72-500s purchased by Virgin Australia in their route network since 2011 . In early April 2013, Skywest was taken over by Virgin Australia. On May 7, 2013, the airline changed its name to Virgin Australia Regional Airlines .
Destinations
From its base at Perth Airport , Virgin Australia Regional Airlines serves numerous destinations in western Australia as well as Denpasar on Bali, currently the only international destination .
