Regional Express Pty Ltd ( REX for short ) is an Australian airline based in Wagga Wagga and based at Wagga Wagga Airport . Outside the Qantas Group, it is the largest Australian regional airline.

history

Fairchild SA227-DC Metro 23 operated by Kendell Airlines in 1999

Regional Express was founded in 2002 through the acquisition of Hazelton Airlines and Kendell Airlines by the Australiawide Airlines Consortium , which was founded by the recently insolvent airline Ansett Australia . After the merger of the two companies, flight operations continued as REX .

In 2005 the parent company was renamed Regional Express Holdings . On November 30, 2005, the airline announced the purchase of Air Link based in Dubbo .

In October 2007, the airline expanded its route network beyond the previously served states of New South Wales and South Australia to Queensland and has since been flying between Brisbane and Maryborough .

The airline is currently suffering from a shortage of pilots , like most in the world, in particular due to the growth of Jetstar Airways and Virgin Australia , which is why some flight routes had to be suspended in November 2007. The airline is therefore investing more in pilot training.

Destinations

Regional Express mainly flies to destinations in eastern Australia from its four hubs . There are also two routes from Perth . Furthermore, flights are operated by the subsidiaries Air Link and Pel-Air .
