The Saab 340 is a regional airliner jointly developed by Saab and Fairchild as SF340, which made its maiden flight in 1983 .
history
The aim of the developers was to design an aircraft that would be in the regional aircraft segment, but would be superior to the competition in terms of speed and comfort. On the basis of the available turboprop engines , an aircraft was developed that was similar in size to today's regional jets with jet engines .
After Fairchild had withdrew from the project in 1984, the development of Saab was in the Swedish Linköping continued alone and the name in Saab 340A changed. Components were manufactured and supplied in other European countries. In 1989, an improved version under the name was Saab 340 B put on the market. There are also the Saab 340AEW Erieye, a military reconnaissance aircraft, and the Saab 340 SAR . Production stopped in 2005.
The stretched version Saab 2000 was later developed from the Saab 340 .
construction
The Saab 340 is a low-wing aircraft that looks like a modern medium-haul aircraft from the outside. Instead of jet engines , the aircraft has turboprop engines with four-bladed propellers . It carries 30 to 39 passengers and is mainly used in the USA. The Saab 340 is equipped with a pressurized cabin .

Incidents
From the first flight in 1983 to September 2019 there were a total of 20 total losses of the Saab 340. In 4 fatal accidents, 48 people were killed. Examples:
- On April 4, 1994 crashed a Saab 340B of KLM Cityhopper ( air vehicle registration PH-KSH ) that a flight under a flight number of the KLM carried out, the go-around on the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport from. The machine was on its way from Amsterdam to Cardiff when a control lamp for the engine oil pressure came on due to a short circuit. Even before the first officer consulted the checklist, the master brought the right engine to idle. After going through the checklist, it was decided to continue the flight, but the captain forgot to restart the shutdown engine. At an altitude of 17,000 feet, the machine's performance limit was reached and it stopped climbing. Since they suspected a defect, the pilots returned to Amsterdam. As the captain to a go- decided the machine rolled directly in front of the runway to the right and crashed. Three people were killed; 9 inmates were injured. The main reason was the misconduct of the pilots (see also KLM flight 433 ) .
- On January 10, 2000, a Saab 340 of the Swiss airline Crossair (HB-AKK) crashed shortly after taking off from Zurich. All ten occupants were killed (see also Crossair flight 498 ) .
- On May 18, 2011, a Saab 340 manned by 19 passengers, two pilots and a stewardess of the Argentine airline Sol Líneas Aéreas (LV-CEJ) crashed in the Argentine province of Río Negro . She was on a domestic flight from the city of Neuquén to Comodoro Rivadavia on the Atlantic. All occupants were killed in the crash (see also Sol Líneas Aéreas flight 5428 ) .
- On January 2, 2015, the pilots of a Saab 340B from the British Loganair (G-LGNL ) failed to keep the aircraft on the runway in strong crosswinds when it took off from Stornoway Airport ( Outer Hebrides , Scotland). Even after the machine had left the runway and raced over grass and a closed runway, the captain left the thrust levers at full throttle and only pulled them back after the nose gear had collapsed. The 29 occupants, 3 crew members and 26 passengers survived the total loss of the machine.
