The Saab 2000 is a further development of the successful regional aircraft Saab 340 . Compared to the 30-seat Saab 340, it has a stretched hull, so that 50 passengers can now be transported at a cruising speed of 665 km / h.
history
The project was started by Saab in 1988. It was designed in a European way , with investments from CASA ( Spain ), Westland ( England ) and Valmet ( Finland ). The first machine flew in 1992.
Within the development there were various technical innovations: So powerful were Allison - Turboprop -Triebwerke fitted with large slowly rotating six-bladed propellers. These engines provide approx. 3096 kW per side, an electronically controlled anti- noise system with many loudspeakers ensures low interior noise (Active Noise Control System) in the cabin and a modern EFIS cockpit from Rockwell Collins with six monitors was installed in the cockpit . The Saab 2000 is also equipped with a pressurized cabin .
The former Swiss regional airline Crossair successfully used the Saab 2000 in regional operations. But hardly any other airline was interested in the aircraft. This was not least due to the fact that regional jets from other manufacturers such as the Embraer ERJ-145 or the Bombardier CRJ200 brought better flight performance for the same purchase price. Finally, drew Saab after 63 built Saab 2000 - of which 34 alone at Crossair went - from the civil aircraft back. Of the Saab 2000s built, 32 still flew in 2019.
At Crossair (operating as Swiss since 2002 , taken over by the German airline Lufthansa in 2005 ), this type was also called “Concordino” because its cruising speed is almost at jet level.
Versions
- Saab 2000
- Regional airliner or feeder aircraft with 50–58 seats for passengers and a luggage compartment in the rear.
- Saab 2000FI
- Measurement aircraft for the Japanese Civil Aviation Bureau, two of which were produced.
- Saab 2000 Erieye AEW & C
- The air and sea surveillance and command control center variant (Airborne Early Warning & Control) is equipped with an AESA - Erieye radar. The radar of the type PS 890 from Ericsson is firmly mounted on the back of the fuselage in a nine meter long box-shaped container. The high-resolution radar should be relatively resistant to EKF interference and detect targets the size of a fighter plane at distances of 450 kilometers; Cruise missiles can be detected 150 kilometers away. For this purpose, unlike the usual AWACS, no continuous all-round search is carried out, but the sector of interest is monitored by means of a wedge-shaped radar search beam. Three console stations are installed in the cabin with which radar operators monitor the airspace. Saab presented the prototype on March 27, 2008 in Linköping.
- Saab 2000MPA "Swordfish"
- This marine surveillance variant is being planned for marine and offshore customers. The sensors include a Selex Galileo Seaspray 7500 maritime surveillance radar with all-round visibility, an ultra-electronics active sonar system for the detection of submarines using buoys, friend-foe detection (IFF), electronic reconnaissance systems, a self-defense system (DASS) with decoys , data link, satellite radio and an electro-optical tower with television and FLIR cameras connected to an automatic identification system (AIS).
use
Civil operator
As of February 5, 2019, 21 Saab 2000s are still being used in regular service:
- Adria Airways (2)
- Eastern Airways (4)
- Peninsula Airways (6)
- Meregrass Inc (3)
Military operator
- Pakistan ( Pakistani Air Force )
- 8 Saab 2000 (7 AEW & C, 1 trainer without radar equipment)
- Saudi Arabia ( Royal Saudi Air Force )
- 3 Saab 2000 (2 AEW & C, 1 as a trainer without radar equipment)
Incidents
Since it was put into operation, five Saab 2000s have been completely lost, one of them in a terrorist attack, another while being rolled by technicians without a pilot's license. One person died in an accident.
- On July 10, 2002, a Swiss Saab 2000 coming from Basel Airport ( aircraft registration HB-IZY ) was so badly damaged during a safety landing at the Werneuchen airfield northeast of Berlin when rolling over an earth wall after several approaches to northern German airports that had been canceled due to violent thunderstorms the aircraft had to be written off as a total loss. One person was slightly injured in the unsuccessful landing (see also Swiss flight 850 ) .
- On the afternoon of October 17, 2019, a PenAir Saab 2000 (N686PA) with 39 passengers and three crew members shot over the runway at Unalaska Airport ( Alaska ). The aircraft slid about 150 meters beyond the end of the runway and came to rest directly in front of the bank of the Bering Sea , in the immediate vicinity of the fishing port. During the slide phase, at least one propeller blade on the left engine broke off and penetrated the cabin. As a result, two passengers were seriously injured and a third died shortly after the accident. Ten other passengers were slightly injured. The machine landed in light rain on the wet runway with a tail wind of up to 27 knots.

The AEW & C variant has several Saab Avitronics MAW 300 missile approach sensors and Saab Avitronics LWS 310 laser warning sensors all around . In the stern, one BOL chaff thrower and three BOP chaff throwers are installed on each underside of the fuselage . These 554 decoy cartridges are ejected semi-automatically or fully automatically every second by the electronic self-defense system in the event of a threat.
