Rockwell Collins Inc. was a US company headquartered in Cedar Rapids , Iowa , which emerged in 2001 from the split of the conglomerate Rockwell International and was acquired by United Technologies Corporation in late 2018 . The company operates in the aerospace industry and manufactures communication, control and navigation systems for both civil and military aviation. Rockwell Collins customers include international corporations such as Boeing and the Airbus Group .

history

Arthur A. Collins founded its forerunner, Collins Radio , in Iowa in 1933 . Collins manufactured radio and communications equipment, for example for South Pole expeditions under Admiral Richard Byrd , and later for the US space programs Mercury , Gemini and Apollo . In 1973, Rockwell International finally bought the company, only to spin it off in 2001 under the name Rockwell Collins .

After the spin-off, Rockwell Collins took over numerous companies or divisions of other, sometimes larger, companies in the field of military display technology, flight simulation and in- flight entertainment - including the in- flight entertainment group Hughes-Avicom , the in -flight entertainment division of the Sony group Sony Trans com , the former for Emperor Group belonging K Systems, Inc. , the flight simulators division of Evans & Sutherland and flight simulators manufacturer Blue Ridge simulation, Inc.

The company is represented worldwide. The largest and most important location is Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which is also where the Rockwell Collins headquarters are located. The approximately 100 hectare area combines production facilities, logistics warehouses, as well as an Excellence Center for Research & Development and the head office. On the American continent alone, Rockwell employs around 16,000 of its more than 20,000 employees worldwide, almost 9,000 of them directly in Cedar Rapids. In addition to the locations in the USA, there are also branches and production facilities in Canada , Mexico and Brazil with a total of around 1,000 employees.

The Europe, Middle East and Africa ( EuMEA ) regions are managed from Toulouse , France . In addition to the French headquarters, the EuMEA headquarters are also located here. The Toulouse site is the largest Rockwell Collins site outside of the USA, closely followed by the German site in Heidelberg . In addition to the German activities, the locations in England , Sweden , Russia and the United Arab Emirates are also managed from here. In total, Rockwell employs more than 2,500 people in the EuMEA region and the number is rising.

The Asia-Pacific region is managed from Singapore . In addition to the regional headquarters there, Rockwell mainly has sales and marketing offices in China , India and Australia with a total of 1,000 employees.

In September 2017, United Technologies (UTC) announced an agreement to acquire Rockwell Collins for $ 30 billion, which was completed on November 27, 2018. Merged with the previous UTC Aerospace Systems , the company now operates under the name Collins Aerospace with the UTC logo.
