Herman Brood
Hermanus (Herman) Brood (born November 5, 1946 in Zwolle , † July 11, 2001 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch blues and rock musician , painter , actor and poet .
Life
Brood got his first piano lessons in 1959, and when he was seventeen he played with the group The Moans . In the same year, 1964, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem for a few months . He then played with Inspirational Blues Combination before he was pianist in the European blues band Cuby and the Blizzards from 1967 to 1969 and 1974 , a Dutch band founded in 1964 by Harry Muskee (Cuby) in Assen (province of Drenthe) . In 1974 the band broke up. Brood accompanied Eddie Boyd , Van Morrison and John Mayall as pianist . For a short time he appeared with the music group STUD and played with Jan Akkerman under the name Flash & Dance Band and with the group Vitesse , which he left in 1975.
In 1976 he founded his band Herman Brood & His Wild Romance , with whom he had some hit singles, Saturday Night and Still Believe , which made him known beyond his home country in France and Germany. The first successes came with the albums Street (1977) and Shpritsz (1978). In the film "Cha Cha" (1979) he acted with Lene Lovich and Nina Hagen , with whom he was close friends. 20 years later he appeared in the German-language documentary Nina Hagen = Punk + Glory, directed by Peter Sempel . In 1979 Brood toured the United States , where Saturday Night reached a chart position, but success did not last long. His album Go Nutz , released in the USA in 1979 , had hardly any response, not even in the Netherlands. The song Saturday Night became his first big hit. Others were Never Be Clever and I Love You Like I Love myself . In 1984 he came out with his remarkable album The Brood . Two years later he appeared in the theater production Kamikaze in the Netherlands and in Germany in the film Stadtrand by Volker Führer. In 1985 he married and had two daughters ("Popinstituut", Netherlands). In the 1980s and 1990s Brood made a name for himself mainly as a painter, draftsman and author, although he continued to give regular concerts. In the late 1980s Brood recorded the album Freeze with E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons . Since the expected success did not materialize, he withdrew from music and devoted himself to painting. In early 1999 he was arrested for illegal possession of weapons. He recorded his new CD Back on the Corner with various musicians in the "Wisseloord Studios", as well as songs by his role models Duke Ellington and Cole Porter .
Brood was addicted to alcohol and drugs for many years , which is also reflected in his songs ( Dope sucks , Rock'n'Roll Junkie ). He painted his pictures in bright colors in the tradition of the Cobra Museum art gallery in Amstelveen . He left behind over 5000 pictures that he painted between 1985 and 2001. In his diary he describes his life at “fast pace”, as the titles of some essays reflect, Leven as een Lavastroom (“Living like a lava flow”), Schilderen as een Straaljager (“Painting like a jet fighter”). The editor of the diary, Jan Donia, calls Herman Brood a " legend of his time ". At the end of 2001, a wax figure of him was made at Madame Tussaud and, at Brood's express request, it was placed next to the figure of Elvis Presley .
On July 11, 2001, Brood committed suicide by jumping from the roof of the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel. His suicide note said that a life without drugs did not seem worth living to him. Literally read: “I don't feel like it anymore. Maybe I'll see you around. ”A few months before his suicide , shortly after the recordings for his last CD “ Ciao Monkey ”, Brood had undergone a final detox, which was necessary because years of drug use had damaged his body beyond repair. Brood's version of Frank Sinatra's My Way was played at his funeral, released as a single, and a few weeks later the song was number 1 in the Dutch Top 40 . The documentary Rock 'n Roll Junkie by Jan Eilander about the eventful life of Herman Brood was released again. In 2001 a tribute to Hermann Brood was held in the Amsterdam rock temple Paradiso , with Nina Hagen performing.
Seven years after his death, a still unknown song was released by him in 2008, which he had written with the rapper MC Drama in 1998: Papa komt vanavond niet thuis ("Papa is not coming home tonight"). The film Wild Romance was released on November 5, 2006 and describes Herman Brood's first five years as a musician. Brood's studio at Spui in Amsterdam was closed in April 2008. At the Nederpop music festival in 2009, the public voted Brood's suicide as the most significant event in the history of Nederpop .
