Jan Akkerman (born December 24, 1946 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch rock and jazz guitarist .

Life

In the 1960s he played in several formations (including Brainbox ) before joining the group Focus in 1970 . Together with the keyboardist and flute player Thijs van Leer and changing bassists and drummers , he recorded several successful albums in the first half of the 1970s. In 1971 the single Hocus Pocus made it to 20th place in the British and 9th place in the US charts. At the turn of the year 1972/73, the single Sylvia reached fourth place in the British charts.

In 1973, Akkerman was named the world's best guitarist by Melody Maker magazine . The Dutch rock and blues singer Herman Brood played for a short time (1975) with Akkerman in the Flash & Dance Band.

In early 1976 he left Focus and began a solo career. On his numerous LPs and CDs, he turned to various styles of music (including Old English lute music , Latin American pieces for acoustic guitar or various types of jazz) and worked with numerous musicians (including Kaz Lux , Claus Ogerman , Tom Barlage , Joachim Kühn and Maggie MacNeal , to whose solo LP Fools Together he contributed an arrangement of the Cream title White Room ). In 1985 Akkerman recorded another album called Focus with Thijs van Leer . However, this had just as little commercial success as his later solo projects. For several years he also worked with the Five Great Guitars (including Jan Kuiper , Harry Sacksioni and Eric Vaarzon Morel ).

In 2004/05 Akkerman, who is still active in the studio and on the stage, received the Golden Harp from the Dutch Conamus Foundation in recognition of his complete works .

Private

Akkerman's daughter Laurie is a singer and sometimes performs with her father.
