Paradiso (Amsterdam)
The Paradiso is a concert and events hall in Amsterdam , Netherlands . It originated from an old church and is located on the Weteringschans near the Leidseplein , in the immediate vicinity of the Holland Casino . The Singelgracht runs behind the building .
The building was built as the church of the Free Congregation (Vrije Gemeente) in Amsterdam 1879-1880 by the architects Gerlof Bartholomeus Salm (1831-1897) and his son Abraham Salm (1857-1915) in neo-Romanesque style.
The Paradiso was opened in 1968 as a publicly subsidized youth center. Together with the nearby Melkweg , it quickly became synonymous with the hippie movement and rock music of the time. The Paradiso was one of the first places where the sale and use of soft drugs was tolerated. From the mid-1970s, punk and new wave took up more space. Glen Matlock's last concert with the Sex Pistols took place at Paradiso. Rave parties became more common in the 1980s .
On May 26 and 27, 1995, the Rolling Stones played two semi-acoustic concerts in Paradiso. One of the songs played was ( Street Fighting Man ) on the Stripped album.
In recent years, the range of events at Paradiso has been expanded to include readings, plays, classical music and crossover events in addition to concerts . In addition to Nirvana , John Cale , Soft Machine , Emilíana Torrini , Link Wray , Omar & the Howlers , Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds , Live , Beth Hart , Smoosh , Laura Mvula and Suzanne Vega , as well as Willy DeVille with Live in 2005 Recorded or filmed in The Lowlands concerts at Paradiso. Bands and singers such as Pink Floyd , David Bowie , Amy Winehouse , Eric Burdon , Rick Wakeman , The Police , Red Hot Chili Peppers , Prince , U2 , Pearl Jam , Triggerfinger , Gregory Porter with the Metropole Orkest , Die Ärzte and Metallica have also performed .
