Omar & The Howlers are in Hattiesburg, 1973 Mississippi , founded Blue Ribbon , later to Austin , Texas moved. They were founded by guitarist and singer Kent Dykes.

Band history

The band was formed in 1973 by guitarist "Omar" Kent Dykes, who was born in McComb , Mississippi in 1950 . He made his first musical experiences at the age of 12 and when he was in his twenties, he formed a band that was soon called "The Howlers". They were a popular party band, playing " R&B and even the occasional polkas and western swing songs." At this time Dykes gave himself the first name Omar and developed his penchant for the blues. He was influenced by the style of Bo Diddleys , in whose hometown he was born. In 1976 the band moved to Austin, which was then home to a thriving music scene. After a while, the band broke up because some members felt that they couldn't make a living from music.

Dykes stayed in Austin and with the music and kept the band name. The first album Big Leg Beat was created in 1980 with a new band . It was not until 1987 that the band signed with a big label and had their first national success with Hard Times In The Land Of Plenty . The band has now recorded around 20 albums and tours regularly, including in Europe. The only fixed point in the line-up is Omar Dykes, who repeatedly gathers different musicians around him to form "The Howlers".

In 2007 he recorded a tribute to Jimmy Reed with Jimmie Vaughan (On The Jimmy Reed Highway), together with Vaughan he also appeared at Austin City Limits .
