Die Ärzte is the name of a German-speaking band from Berlin . Along with the Düsseldorf band Die Toten Hosen, it is one of the most commercially successful German music groups with roots in punk rock .

The band was founded in 1982, from 1988 they were separated. Since 1993, it consists of Farin Urlaub (civil Jan Vetter), Bela B (civil Dirk Felsenheimer) and Rodrigo González .

Band history

1982–1986: founding years

Studio albums : Debil , In the shadow of the doctors

Dirk Felsenheimer ("Bela B.", today "Bela B" without any points) and Jan Vetter (Farin Urlaub) met in 1980 at the Ballhaus Spandau disco . Since the guitarist of Felsenheimer's punk band at the time, Soilent Grün , had his guitar stolen, Farin replaced his position. When the band split up just a year later, Felsenheimer and Vetter founded "Die Ärzte" together with bassist Sahnie (bourgeois Hans Runge). By their own admission, they didn't choose the band name for any particular reason. However, there are various theories about the origin of the name, not least because of the band members' own, mostly humorous comments; One of the popular assumptions is that Bela B always missed a band starting with the letter Ä on the alphabetically sorted shelves of record stores . The doctors gave their first concert in September 1982 in an occupied house on Heinrichplatz in Kreuzberg , followed by smaller TV appearances and winning the rock competition of the Berlin Senate endowed with 10,000 DM . With the help of the prize money, the doctors recorded the mini LP Uns geht's prima ... , which was released in 1984 on the Berlin label Vielklang . Through a tip from Jim Rakete , who was also working in band management at the time, CBS Schallplatten GmbH signed the doctors.

The band should first record an EP . Based on this, the record company wanted to negotiate the terms of the contract. However, in the time allotted to them, the doctors recorded an entire album, Debil , in order to impress the record company. It marks the band's first major success and is now considered their breakthrough album.

In order to overcome a subsequent financial lean period, the doctors played in the German film Richy Guitar in 1984 , in which Vetter, Felsenheimer and Runge play the role of a band in search of success.

Also in 1985 the doctors released their second studio album Im Schatten der Doctors , which also hit the charts for the first time.

The bassist Sahnie only contributed a single song to the album, Like a child, which Micha Suurbier had actually written (Sahnie was the only member of Ms. Suurbier who entered GEMA at the time, and thus he was the official author of the song). Sahnie kept this from Felsenheimer and Urlaub. Sahnie also played his basses less and less, he left the studio work completely to vacation and Felsenheimer and the then producer Micki Meuser. The album also only contains one song on which Bela B. plays the drums (Käfer), the rest was programmed by Micki Meuser in his presence, which resulted in a very powerful sound (best example: run, don't run!) .

Only a year later, during the production of the third album Die Ärzte , Sahnie left the band due to personal differences. Urlaub and Felsenheimer had increasingly reproached him for not caring enough about the music and only playing in the band because of the groupies and the money. He was also considered to be very unreliable, as his business administration studies consumed a lot of time and he insisted on arranging the band's dates according to him. When he demanded that Bela B. be thrown out of the band and the band needed his face, a dispute broke out among the members, as a result of which Sahnie was released from the band.

1986–1988: indexing, GDR and dissolution

Studio albums: The Doctors , That's not the whole truth ...

The third studio album Die Ärzte followed in 1986, and the bass sequences of the album were recorded by producer Manfred Praeker . Hagen Liebing, aka “The Incredible Hagen”, joined the band as a live bass player . On January 27, 1987, the album was indexed because of the song Geschwisterliebe contained on it . In addition, on June 10, 1987, the then three-year-old debut album Debil was indexed because of the lyrics to Claudia hat 'nen shepherd and lullaby . The Karstadt Corporation took after indexing of the two albums the whole program of the band from the range; Television appearances became increasingly difficult for doctors during this time. A financial disaster loomed, so that already at this point in time the band was considering a breakup for the first time: The members had no financial cushion and both the income from CD and LP sales and the income from GEMA rights exploitation were declined sharply.

As a reaction to the indexing of the pieces, the doctors released the mini-LP Ab 18 in 1987 , which, along with a few others, contained all songs indexed so far, and thus (successfully) forced a re-indexing of one of their albums. Almost at the same time, the doctors tried again on a regular studio album.

With Gehn wie ein Egyptter , a cover version of Walk Like an Egyptian by The Bangles , a single was released that was often played on the radio. But the recordings for the next album were anything but successful, the band seemed to have burned out and only came into the studio with mediocre songs. In response, they decided to produce an album of mostly old pieces and record just two of a total of seven new pieces and go like an Egyptian . Some unindexed songs from the albums Debil and Die Ärzte were re-released as remixes and in other versions on the album.

The first producer was Uwe Hoffmann , who was to produce all of the band's other albums up to the 2003 double album Gerärm . They also named the album according to a compilation Is that all? .

However, the doctors also disregarded the indexing decision of the BPjM: On the occasion of a concert in Kleve in 1988 , the doctors played an instrumental version of the song Geschwisterliebe and were thereupon sentenced by the local district court in criminal proceedings for violating the indexing decision to a fine of 1000 DM each  . In fact, the doctors only sang the word "love" along on the last line of the piece. Last but not least, an unofficially manufactured bootleg (and today a coveted collector's item among doctors fans) by a concert goer in Kleve refuted the thesis of the district court. Nevertheless, the band had previously ironically asked the audience not to sing along to the text, and therefore probably did not act against the judgment. The doctors had also played the song Claudia III live, which was intended as a provocation for the Federal Testing Office: "Claudia" now had "Christian intercourse" , unlike in the indicated Claudia hats shepherd dog . In general, for sibling love , the doctors only provided the playback and let the audience sing, not without asking them to do the opposite beforehand.

During this time, while on vacation in Cyprus , Farin and Bela decided to break up the band, also because of the dissatisfaction with Is that all? - 13 highlights with the doctors .

Although the doctors came from Berlin, which was then divided, they tried to gain a foothold in the East German music sector very late. The declared GDR friend and new bassist Hagen Liebing had a major influence on the commitment in the GDR in 1986. For example, in the acknowledgment of the album This is not the whole truth ... expressly: "... all fans and friends in the GDR… “It was also Hagen who recorded the band's music on cassettes and presented it in department stores, restaurants and youth clubs in East Berlin . As a result of this commitment, the then youth radio station DT64 became aware of the doctors and arranged an interview, which was initially not broadcast. On a second visit to East Berlin, the doctors went to a concert by the band ' The Others ' and the desire grew to organize their own tour through the GDR. The band's manager at the time, Conny Konzack , finally arranged the release of an LP and a short tour with the state record company Amiga , which was to include a total of ten appearances. In agreement with Amiga, the LP Is that all? selected for publication, but individual songs were exchanged. Following the rules of the planned economy , Amiga forecast a print run of 2000 copies for the LP. However, it was not supposed to be released for the time being, as the radio interview mentioned with DT64 was broadcast shortly afterwards and the cultural authorities then unceremoniously suspended the album and tour. In 1987, however, without the knowledge of the doctors, an EP was released as part of the so-called quartet series entitled Die Ärzte auf Amiga, which contained the four songs Too late, Walk like an Egyptian, radio burns and you want to kiss me . With the fall of the Berlin Wall , contact between Columbia Records and Amiga broke off. From a later point of view, Bela B. summed up in 2001:

“The GDR was passé and we had dissolved. In retrospect, we should have played at least once in East Berlin. "

- Bela B. Felsenheimer

The breakup of the band had already been decided at this point. That's not the whole truth ... should be the trio's last studio album. The rumors about a possible separation of the group, as expected, strongly fueled album and concert ticket sales, the single release Westerland initially became their greatest commercial success. This was followed by the band's farewell tour, on which the recordings of the live LP Nach uns die Sintflut were recorded. Finally, on July 9, 1988, the doctors' last concert for the time being took place in Westerland on Sylt . In the same year, the triple live album was released as the last planned release with a total of 37 tracks. Against the will of the record company it was sold for the price of a double album.

1988–1993: Separate paths

After the dissolution, the LP was released in 1989 The Doctors earlier! , Contained two previously unreleased tracks alongside old sampler contributions and songs of the first plates.

From 1988 to 1993 Farin and Bela tried with the bands King Køng and Depp Jones (first "SUMP"), but the commercial success remained in both cases. On the other hand, the records of the doctors sold better in the time of the separation than in the years before, when the band still existed.

In 1990 Bela and Farin met again in the studio. Under the pseudonym "Bela B. & Jan" they recorded the song We need ... Werner as the soundtrack for the film Werner - Beinhart! on.

1993–2000: re-establishment

Studio albums: The Beast in Human Form , Planet Punk , Le Frisur , 13

In 1993 Bela B. and Farin Urlaub decided to re-establish the band together with Depp Jones guitarist Rodrigo González on bass. They were looking for their new record company with a full-page advertisement (“Best band in the world is looking for a record company”) in the magazine Musik Markt . The doctors eventually decided to use metronomes . Bela also acquired an endorsement contract from the cymbal company Paiste, which guaranteed him the equipment for concerts, rehearsals and recordings. Through Rodrigo, Farin Urlaub met the guitar maker Thomas Harm, who made guitars for him as unique pieces according to his ideas. The album The Beast in Human Form was recorded, with which the return of the doctors succeeded. The first single, Schrei nach Liebe , picked up on the burgeoning right-wing extremism in a united Germany. Between October 1993 and August 1994 they played a total of 155 concerts first on the Plugged Tour and then on the Tour Tour , which is based on the name of the Sat.1 - Film-Film .

The first best-of album followed in 1994, Das Beste from shortly after earlier to now, with many old songs. But there were also B-sides and some sampler contributions from the 1980s for the youth magazine Moskito combined on the double album. For Kiss - tribute album Kiss My Ass the group took the 1994 title Kiss Unholy Transferred into the German language text and wove elements of disco hits I Was Made for Lovin 'You with one. This cover version was also released in the USA on the limited edition of the album, which appeared on a red record .

The doctors live in Cologne 1998

The second studio album after the reunion, Planet Punk , was released on September 18, 1995. There was a long discussion about the name beforehand; the result was a compromise that nobody was really happy with. However, the name sparked a discussion about what the doctors actually had to do with punk. The album itself turned out to be a lot more punk and experimental than the previous ones. As a promotion, the doctors wanted to stick naked photos of Bela B. and Farin Urlaub and a completely overclothed Rodrigo González on billboards without any text. However, the idea was not implemented. The nude pictures were used for concert tickets a few years later. The album was followed by a tour called A Question of Honor .

In the same year the doctors took the EP 1, 2, 3, 4 - Bull State! on. This aggressive punk album, which contains cover versions of Wire and the Buttocks as well as a punk version of the song Paul on Debil , was only available for purchase at concerts and from fan clubs and was initially only released as a 7 "vinyl album. Only half a album A year later, the concept album Le Frisur , originally planned as an EP only, was released on May 27, 1996. It was expected to compete with Planet Punk, which was still in the charts at the time, but was won over by the Fans not received as positively as its predecessor.

This was followed by a major tour called the Voodoo Lounge . The doctors satirized the Rolling Stones tour with the title . The tour videos Gefangen im Schattenreich by Die Doctors and Even more Gefangen im Schattenreich by Die Doctors (Part 2) appeared in the same year.

In 1996 a dream came true for bassist Rod and drummer Bela B. The rock band Kiss started a reunion tour and the doctors played in Germany and Switzerland as their opening act. In 1997, more concerts followed as the opening act for Kiss. This was followed by a non-advertised secret tour under the name Ä live . In 1997 the label Gringo Records released the double album Götterdämmerung in honor of the doctors, on which several artists covered 34 songs by the doctors.

In 1998, the band founded the music label Hot Action Records . Sound carriers published below this are free of copy protection measures , as the band sees such measures as a considerable disadvantage for the 'honest buyer'. Apart from that, the use of bypassable copy protection makes you look ridiculous.

The album 13 , released on May 25, 1998, contains the single Men Are Pigs , which was the first number 1 in the German single charts. At the end of 1998 the band started the Paul secret tour . The Attacke Royal tour, which included almost 70 concerts, followed. After this success and the long tour, the band was on the verge of breaking up again, as the three allegedly "just couldn't see each other anymore".

During this time, the doctors also broke off contact with Bravo , as the latter was increasingly printing dirty stories in which Farin Urlaub was portrayed as a brutal thug. After a short break, the live double album We want only your soul was put together from recordings they had collected since 1993 and released on November 11, 1999.

There was also a live encore for members of the Doctors' fan club: The Doctors released another CD under the title Satanic Horses , which featured newer recordings of many titles that had already appeared as live versions on Nach uns die Sintflut .

Fans could submit song requests via chat. Also in 2001 the album 5, 6, 7, 8 - Bullenstaat! , which in addition to its predecessor from 1995, which consisted almost exclusively of cover versions of German punk bands, also contained about twenty other pieces. This record was also only sold at concerts and by fan clubs.

Yoko Ono was released as a single on March 5, 2001 - the song itself has a running time of just 30 seconds. The video for the single was entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the shortest music video in the world with its 45 seconds . In the summer of 2001, the tour " Up on the stage, invisible!" . In addition to Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the doctors also played for the first time in Luxembourg and Italy , but only one concert each. Following the tour final concert in Westerland , the reading tour on his own biography followed in autumn 2001. An oversized guinea pig eats the earth , which was written by doctor fan and former fan club director Markus Karg, through cinemas in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

On June 21, 2002, the group gave their 20-year anniversary concert entitled 15 Years Net in front of around 35,000 spectators on Mariannenplatz in Berlin-Kreuzberg . The concert title was to be understood as an allusion to the dissolution of the doctors between 1988 and 1993. For the admission price of 7 euros, the doctors played the highlights of the band's history live in front of the audience for about three hours. As a surprise guest, Hagen Liebing appeared in the performance of 2000 girls on bass and Diane Weigmann sang her part in Sometimes women have .

On August 31 of the same year the doctors played an unplugged concert at the Albert Schweitzer grammar school in Hamburg , which was recorded as an MTV unplugged recording. On September 29, 2003, the band's first double studio album entitled Noise was released . With the song Deine Schuld, also released as a single, the doctors once again struck political tones. The beyond-the-limit-of-the-reasonable tour with the Hamburg hip-hop group Fettes Brot as the opening act followed; Due to the high demand, the doctors gave three additional concerts on the weekend of June 18-20, 2004 in Berlin's Wuhlheide in front of 20,000 fans each, with the Village People engaged as the opening act . In Oberhausen, the doctors recorded the first regular live DVD on the tour , which has been available in stores since August 23, 2004 under the title The band they called the horse . Before the unrock star tour that followed, the doctors went on vacation again. The farewell concert was given by the doctors in front of 22,000 people on August 8, 2004 in the Berlin Waldbühne .

In autumn 2004 a song book was published with the texts and chords of all 262 published titles. The first Die-Ärzte tour through South America followed in November as the end of the year . Among other things, they appeared in various clubs in Buenos Aires , Santiago de Chile and San Carlos as the opening act for La Vela Puerca .

Since November 30, 2004 the album Debil is no longer on the index. The committee of the Federal Testing Office for Media Harmful to Young People (BPjM) found after a renewed examination that the songs Claudia hat 'nen Shepherd and Lullaby are no longer to be classified as harmful to young people. The CD was therefore deleted from the list and has been available in stores to a limited extent since then. As a result, the album Devil was released on October 21, 2005 , the re-release of the album Debil with a few bonus tracks, including the previously unreleased piece feet off the table .

In 2005, Die Ärzte also played as headliners at the German indie rock double festival Hurricane / Southside . At the end of 2005 a ring binder was published with the title Die Ärzte: Notenfreund (subheading: Notes - The Wrong Path to Punk Rock ) . It contains the lyrics, vocal melodies and guitar chords of all tracks sorted by album. The folder can be expanded so that new sheets can be purchased for new publications.

The following year, on October 6th, another best-of double album was released with the title Bäst of , which was delivered in a metal box. You can hear all the singles released since 1993 as well as the associated B-sides .

On December 31, 2006, a sold out New Year's Eve concert took place in Cologne's Rheinenergiestadion under the title Doctors instead of Böller . All interior tickets were sold out within two weeks, and a total of around 45,000 fans followed the concert in Cologne-Müngersdorf . The film producer and director Marc Schütrumpf produced the 45-minute documentary Doctors Instead of Firecrackers, which shows the band and their crew preparing for it and gives an authentic look behind the scenes of this special concert. In preparation for this, another secret concert took place in Berlin on December 29, 2006 under the name Die Ärzte, under a false name .

From April to June 2007, the Doctors recorded a new album that had already been announced at the Doctors instead of Firecrackers concert. The recordings for the album Jazz is different , which were made in Berlin again , were only interrupted for appearances at Rock am Ring (as headliner) and Rock im Park in Germany, at the Frequency Festival in Austria and at the Open Air Gampel in Switzerland, which made the escape out-of-the-studio tour. To give their fans an insight into the studio work, a short video was published on the doctors website on each studio day.

At the beginning of June 2007, the dates for the tour Es wird tight were published. Many tour dates were sold out after just three weeks, after which several additional dates were set. It was also announced that the band had parted ways with their long-time producer Uwe Hoffmann, who had produced all of the Ärzte publications since 1987 ( Is that everything? ) , And that the following album was now supported by TeamTonic (Mirko Schaffer, Oliver Zülch and Philipp Hoppen).

At the beginning of October the first single Junge from the announced album was released. The video premiered on September 14th on MTV, but in the version defused by the band itself to protect minors. The uncensored version can only be seen on TV from 10:00 p.m. onwards. The single was followed on November 2, 2007 by the new album Jazz ist anders, which the band had produced itself for the first time since 1984. The publication was followed by the Es-wird-tight tour at the end of 2007 . In the course of 2008, the other singles Lied vom Scheitern and Lasse redn followed as the third single.

In mid-May 2008 the Jazzfäst tour started in Moscow , which took the doctors not only through the German-speaking area, but also to Prague and Budapest, until the end of August 2008. They also played at several major festivals in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Also in 2008, the doctors were awarded the Echo music prize in the Rock / Alternative Group of the Year category (national) and the 1LIVE crown for their life's work. They also received a World Music Award in the category of best artist in Germany for the high sales of Jazz is anders .

On April 16, 2011, the doctors appeared as the opening act for Bonaparte in the Columbiahalle in Berlin. Then they completed a club tour through eight cities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland under the pseudonym Laternen-Joe .

In November 2011, doctor manager Axel Schulz announced an official break for the first time in the band's history in an open letter to the fan club. The upcoming album as well as the upcoming tour will remain the last joint activity for an "indefinitely long time". A short time later it was announced that the fan club would be completely closed after the "THE END is not over TOUR 2012".

On December 19, 2011, the doctors played a concert in Dortmund's Westfalenhalle with the title XX concert only for women. The XY concert followed on December 20th , in which only men were allowed to participate.

After a long collaboration, in 2011 they separated from art director Thomas “Schwarwel” Meitsch , who had designed all the graphic content for all of the doctors' publications and Farin Urlaub's solo project since 1993 (logos, sound carriers, posters, website, merchandise). The new graphic designer was Felix Schlueter from Hamburg.

A new EP called zeiDverschwÄndung was released in March 2012 and was presented live for the first time on March 21, 2012 on the Harald Schmidt Show. ZeiDverschwÄndung was the first single from the album also , that is since the 13th April 2012 at the trade. This was followed by the tour THE END is not over yet . All concerts on this tour - with the exception of the festival appearances - were recorded and offered to the audience for purchase on a USB stick at the end of the show. The performance on June 24, 2012 at the Hurricane Festival in Scheeßel was recorded and broadcast by ZDF.kultur . During the tour, M&F was decoupled from the album and offered as a single with two B-sides. The doctors broke up at the last concert of this tour in order to celebrate their big comeback on the previously announced Das Comeback tour. On October 26, 2012 the new single Is that still punk rock? Was released , which was presented as a split single and on which the title track and four newly recorded pieces of her alter ego Lantern Joe can be found.

2013–2017: Band break after touring

For the 2013 Echo Awards, at which the doctors were nominated three times, the group canceled because they did not want to be on a list of nominees with the band Frei.Wild . Frei.Wild was excluded from the award, but the doctors stayed away from the event.

The band has toured twice. Once on the big open-air medical festival tour ; among other things, LaBrassBanda appeared as the opening act. The doctors from Bonaparte , NOFX , Donots , Katzenjammer , UK Subs , Pascow , Kraftklub , Desorden Público , Triggerfinger , The Damned , The Godfathers , Dÿse , Sator and Danko Jones were also supported. The other time on the tour The comeback is not over yet with performances in Prague and Warsaw as well. The planned appearance at the Kubana Festival in Anapa (Russia) was canceled.

As part of the The-END-Is-Not-Over- Tour 2012, a live DVD entitled The Night of Demons was created , which was released on Friday, September 13, 2013. The resulting tour film was shown exclusively on August 26, 2013 in all UCI Kinowelt cinemas in Germany and Austria.

On September 11, 2015, the song Schrei nach Liebe , triggered by Aktion Arschloch , reached number one in the German single charts for the first time exactly 22 years and one day after its first release , after returning to number 12 the week before. In addition to the doctors, some providers such as Google , Amazon , Apple and Universal also donated their income to the sales.

On September 25, 2016, the ex-doctor's bassist Hagen Liebing died in Berlin at the age of 55 from complications from a brain tumor.

Since 2018: Comeback with performances and new music

On June 3, 2018, the band was confirmed as headlining Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park 2019, and on June 14, 2018 as headlining Nova Rock 2019.

As of November 16, 2018, all of the band's unindexed albums have been available on music streaming services. The actually indexed album Die Ärzte is also available, but without the song Geschwisterliebe, which is decisive for the indexing . Before that, the band was not represented on any such platform, which Farin Urlaub justified with the starvation wages of the streaming services for the musicians.

The compilation Seitenhirsch was published on December 14, 2018 . It contains the entire work of the band on 33 audio CDs and 11 books with exclusive demos and bonus material.

Separation rumors about the band have increased since the beginning of 2019. On February 5, 2019, the doctors published a word puzzle on their website, in which a song excerpt could be heard if the letter was entered correctly. Initially, many fans and media suspected that the eight-digit word goodbye was the answer. However, with the last letter on March 18, 2019, the word abstract was revealed. Shortly after midnight, the doctors then published a new song entitled Farewell on YouTube . Cultural journalist Kai Löffler described the band's behavior as an effective marketing strategy . He suspects that an album with the title Abschied will be released in the near future, analogous to the newly released song.

On April 30, 2019, the band uploaded the video for the song Returns on YouTube , which was released together with the song Abschied on May 1, 2019 as a mini-EP under the name Drei Mann - Zwei Songs and was only available as a download.

In addition to four festival appearances in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the Ärzte went on a "Miles & More" European tour from May 16, 2019, performing in ten clubs in ten countries. The tour was completely sold out after a few hours.

At the beginning of November 2019, the doctors announced a new album and a tour under the name "In The Ä Tonight" for the year 2020 in 15 cities, including two concerts in Austria and one in Switzerland. Advance sales began on the afternoon of November 14, 2019, and tickets were sold out after just a few minutes. A short time later, a further eleven dates for additional concerts were published - these tickets were also sold out just a few minutes later.

On March 27, 2020, they released the title Ein Lied für Jetzt, including a video, in which the band deals with the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects .

On August 21, 2020, the band released a new single called Morgens Pauken . She also announced a new album titled Hell for October 23, 2020.

Music style and appearance

There is a lot of argument about the musical classification of the Berlin band, as the doctors are very keen to experiment. What can be clearly stated is that their style of music is somewhere between punk rock and pop . In retrospect, it becomes clear that the physicians were both musically and externally impressed and influenced by the rockabilly boom of the time (for which the Stray Cats were primarily responsible ), in addition to the "classic" Berlin punk scene .

The band's musical style is characterized by very simple, memorable melodies and lyrics that oscillate between (quite desirable) silliness and irony. Later songs in particular are, however, lavishly arranged and parody different musical styles. Numerous song texts are characterized by clever puns or infantile humor.

"Self-irony should generally play a major role in life."

- Rodrigo González

But there are also lyrics with serious content that have become more common on the newer albums. For example, the doctors also sing ballads and love songs, most of which are penned by Farin Urlaub, with many (for example, Too late , close your eyes , come back or nothing in the world) about the end of a relationship.

They also knew how to deal with censorship with humor. The song Please Please from the album This is not the whole truth ... in 1988 it was supposed to be a musical reworking of the indexing. The doctors later wrote a song about censorship and worked on the subject further. Live bypassing the ban on playing the pieces - then as now - by playing the music and letting the fans sing to it - at least with Geschwisterliebe, which was recorded live in Hamburg in 1988 with the fans' singing and as a bonus single Der Ritt auf dem Schmetterling the live album Nach uns die Sintflut was added in the first edition so that the whole album could not be indexed because of the title.

development

On the first EPs (Too good to be true and We're fine) and albums (Debil, Im Schatten der Ärzte) you can clearly hear that the doctors were imitating pop stars at that time. The melodies corresponded to the songs you could hear on the radio at the time, they were simple and easy to remember. The texts were characterized by humor and irony, and childish-looking texts were also used, for example with Teddy Bear, Paul or Red Mini Skirt, sometimes they were also sarcastic (for example lullaby) .

With the album Die Ärzte , however, it becomes clear that the band would go back to rock 'n' roll. The songs were still more clearly assigned to the pop genre than to rock 'n' roll, but the lyrics were more mature and songs like Alone in the Night and Mysteryland conveyed the image of dark rock 'n' roll. Uwe Hoffmann also contributed to this development, from the subsequent compilations Is that everything? - 13 highlights with the doctors up to and including noise all doctors albums should produce.

“The guitars with us were always not hard enough for me. And Farin also started to listen to heavy metal now. "

- Bela B. Felsenheimer

The last album before the breakup, This is not the whole truth ..., then represents a clear step towards rock. Good times and the winner let you feel the influence of Bela's closeness to the band Sodom . Farin wrote a metal piece with Elke .

The time of separation had an impact on the Reunion work The Beast in Human Form . She and Rod contributed to the fact that it was now more of a real rock album, which could be said to contain borrowings from pop music, but not the other way around. It was here that the doctors struck political tones for the first time on a studio album: With a cry for love , they created a song against neo-Nazis that is still popular today.

The guitar clearly comes to the fore on Planet Punk . Many parts that would normally be played with an acoustic guitar were played with an electric guitar here, such as Die Banane .

“A single guitar wall. Hoffmann's stroke of genius! "

- Bela B. Felsenheimer

With the samba piece Meine Ex (plodged girlfriend) , the doctors once again took a new musical path. For Die Beast in Human Form they had already recorded a sarcastic folk song with a brass band when it evening is recorded.

The band let off steam with the concept album Le Frisur . It turned out to be very experimental, which was highly praised by the underground scene, but put off one or the other buyer.

With the regular albums 13 and Runter mit den Spendierhosen, Invisible two more classic doctors albums followed. Here, nor is My Best Friend's worth noting what was the biggest success of the band. Much to my chagrin, it became a long-time radio player; when it was played - against the interests of the band - at the Oktoberfest and at Ballermann , it was decided not to play the piece live anymore.

"It is our failed child."

- Farin vacation

Nevertheless, it was published on the live album We only want your soul once again in a live version, which was published between 13 and Down with the Donation Pants, Invisible . The brass from friends The Busters played along. Noise became a political album. Many pieces point to grievances (for example not knowing), others call for action (such as your fault ).

Jazz is different , on the other hand, can be associated more with pop music ( e.g. through sky blue, song about failure and perfect) , but also has clear rock elements (such as Junge and Living Hell) . All in all, like its predecessor, it is more serious, especially because of songs like Alone and Gone is Over .

For publications 1, 2, 3, 4 - Bull State! (1994) and 5, 6, 7, 8 - Bull State! (2001), the Ärzte recorded the band's only two purely punk albums, which are not commercially available. The sale takes place only through the fan club or at concerts.

Influences

According to her own words, the Doctors during this period were influenced by 1950s pop and the Comedian Harmonists . Especially the subtle rhymes of the Comedian Harmonists were decisive for the development of the band. Dion and the Belmonts also had a significant influence on the artistic development of the doctors . From this, the doctors devised their own choral punk rock with harmonic melodies and harmonies borrowed from pop. Farin also explained that the Beatles had a significant influence on his musical development and also inspired him when writing his songs.

Some of the doctors' songs also pay homage to musical role models; so the song At the End of My Body (on Le Frisur ) is a clear imitation of the song Astronomy Domine by Pink Floyd . The piece morgue (on down with the donation pants, invisible!) Is very reminiscent of the style of The Sisters of Mercy . It is no coincidence that Rod's singing in Anti-Zombie is reminiscent of Glenn Danzig's singing . On the Ramones tribute sampler Todos Somos Ramones (A Hommage) the doctors are represented with Die Wiking-Jugend has kidnapped my girl ( cover version of The KKK Took My Baby Away ). The song My baby was at the hairdresser's is also very reminiscent of the aforementioned Ramones song.

Furthermore, Bela and Rod are big Kiss fans.

“Rodrigo and I went to Castle Donington, England, in 1996 to see Kiss. It was also something special - their first masked show in Europe for ages. "

- Bela B. Felsenheimer

On the other hand, doctors in German-speaking countries nowadays have a significant influence on many young people and their bands. The doctors are often one of the reasons that young people start a band. Well-known examples are the Killerpilze and Halz Maul und Spiel . The doctors name both groups as their role models.

Relationship to punk

They have almost nothing in common with the punk scene from which the doctors originally came. Since the band was founded, the punk scene has often accused them of having become commercial.

“Okay, I admit: my prostate is chrome-plated. First gold-plated and then chrome-plated. Punk is just the idea behind the 'doctors'. We do everything else as we see fit. "

- Bela B. Felsenheimer

The doctors were and still are not easy to distinguish from the punk scene. In terms of their attitude towards life and their clothing, they are more or less connected to punk. The composition of the band from guitar, drums and bass (minimal instrumentation) and the simplicity of the compositions (“three chords”) correspond to that of a punk band. As a non-alcoholic, non-smoker and enthusiastic milk drinker, Farin Urlaub has distinguished himself from the typical lifestyle of a punk since the beginning.

Especially in the 1980s, the doctors kept a clear distance from punk rock, especially in terms of text from politicized punk according to the then common belief. Instead, many songs contained pop elements. Examples are the Doctors' titles Teenage Love and Teddy Bear . As the band's biography shows, Farin found the political punk rock of the day to be "a dead end that [they] were too blunt and that [they] were too silly," and suggested that "[they] imitate pop stars." Bela and Farin "suddenly lost interest in hardcore punk when they founded the Doctors". By deliberately delimiting the text from the usual punk statements, the doctors were quickly classified as a fun punk band. According to the definition of fun punk, it is "funny party music" that often deals with absurd topics, alcohol excesses or cynical-ironic or socially critical topics. The doctors, however, pushed absurd content to the point of breaking taboos , which resulted in the indexing of some of their albums at the time and thus a temporary interruption in commercial success.

The doctors' reunion in 1993 also took place for political reasons. The first album after the reunion has a left-wing political twist, at the same time the music had become heavier overall. Above all, the anti-fascist song cry for love became known . Together with Planet Punk and the EP 1, 2, 3, 4 - Bullenstaat! At least in this phase, one can clearly attribute the music of the doctors to punk rock. The fun punk elements were not lost at this time either. The sound became a bit more poppy on later albums, but clear announcements against Nazis continued to appear, for example in A Summer Just for Me in 2000. In addition, in 2001 the punk album 5, 6, 7, 8 - Bullenstaat! published, which is to be understood more as a concept album and less as a self-image of the band, which at the time maintained a rather different style. In the years that followed, doctors also recited the term punk from a distance. Also on the album from 2012 is the song Is that still punk rock? criticizes the fact that the question of whether the band still belongs to the punk scene (e.g. despite their chart successes) is too high a priority. This is shown on the basis of a young man who, since having a conventional love for an Andrea, has no more time to " drink " and no longer takes part in May demonstrations .

The doctors occasionally emerge through further engagement against the law. After the right-wing populist former Federal Councilor Christoph Blocher was voted out of office in Switzerland, the band offered their latest album, Jazz ist anders, in the economy version, free for all Swiss to download for 24 hours on December 13, 2007. The prerequisite for this download was that, as a Swiss citizen with voting rights, you had not voted Blocher or his party, the SVP , in the parliamentary elections.

There were and are various T-shirts and patches that read “Doctors fans against the right”, and the doctors' basic attitude is clearly left-wing political.

Live performances

The doctors have played around 800 concerts on a total of 24 tours (excluding the tour as the opening act for Kiss ).

“They stood there and thought, what are they doing, what kind of birds are they? They don't even know their songs, and they forget the lyrics too. "

- Rodrigo González

When performing live, the doctors interpret the songs arranged on the record as pop pieces, as a rule, in a much more punk fashion and sometimes completely new interpretations of the pieces are created here. Titles that are especially popular among fans are repeatedly changed in terms of the lyrics by the band, which already earned the band the reputation of a classic live band in the 1980s. Examples of this are Meine Ex (plodged girlfriend), who during the “Beyond-the-Limit-of-the-Reasonable” tour in 2003 in an Oi! Version was played or the chorus involvement of the audience with your girlfriend (would be too exhausting for me ...) .

When the Berlin group performs live, the focus is on having fun; The focus of the appearances was - then as now - the dialogues between the two doctors' founders Farin Urlaub and Bela B; the respective bassists Sahnie, Hagen Liebing and Rodrigo González are behind the work of the two protagonists. For this reason, fans often asked for a live album in the early days. After the band broke up, the urge was given in with the release of the live LP Nach uns die Sintflut .

Changes to the lyrics by Farin and Bela, which make the songs seem absurd, are regularly made live. Two well-known examples of this are Too Late and Rock Rendezvous . According to the band, the latter has never been played with the original lyrics and even improvised in the practice room. To late, however, there is usually lengthy textual improvisation before the last chorus, sometimes the perspective of the text is completely reversed; In the original, the poor protagonist sings about his girlfriend leaving him for a rich rival, while the unplugged version on Rock'n'Roll Realschule is about a rich man who loses his girlfriend to a poor man. The band's popular stylistic decorative elements on the stage are inflatable "Gwendoline" figures, which are borrowed from their BDSM song Sweet Sweet Gwendoline from 1986, light panels and various kinds of light effects. The songs Schrei nach Liebe, Geisterhaus and Westerland are also often used pyrotechnic effects, such as jet flames on the stage, are used.

The 'doctors' rarely play cover versions of other bands. Nevertheless, the band uses the option of quoting other titles and artists for their own songs. Doctors also don't stop at commercials (for example, FA commercials in Too Late - or pop star live recordings). On all live records there are references to music from the respective time. To what extent the doctors pay tribute to other artists or ironize the titles is mostly unknown.

In contrast to befriended bands like Die Toten Hosen or the Beatsteaks , the doctors are largely unknown outside of the German-speaking music region; Live performances outside of Germany, Austria and Switzerland are therefore rare. Nevertheless, the doctors have given live concerts in Luxembourg, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Poland, Russia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Japan as part of their musical career.

For the live concerts in Japan, a best-of of the albums that had been released after Planet Punk was put together under the title the doctors .

Commitment to animal and environmental protection

Since 2007, the doctors perform their Tournees carbon neutral through by all the CO 2 emissions that occur in their Tournees, for example by planting trees to compensate leave. Bela B and Farin Urlaub refer to themselves as vegetarians and Bela B says that he does this for the environment. The doctors support the marine conservation organization Sea Shepherd and invited their volunteers to accompany them on their 2012 tour. To mark the occasion, they played the song Save the Whales while the Sea Shepherd logo was faded in on the main screen. The doctors Viva con Agua and Bela B is an advisory board member in the Cradle to Cradle Laboratory C2C Lab .

In the songs Grotesksong , Baby , Ignorama , Blumen and Abschied , Die Ärzte deal with the issues of animal and environmental protection . In the song Abschied , which is available as a version for vegetarians and vegans , it says, among other things: "Come on, we're finally dying out. Because that's better for the world" or "The Anthropocene must come to an end".

Trivia

The musicians self-ironically describe themselves as " The best band in the world ".

After the doctors' reunion, several companies were founded around them, and the band played a key role in their success. The Red Gourmet Fraction has been in charge of catering at the 'Ärzten' since 1993. Today the RGF cooks for several punk bands that go on tour in or from Germany.

After the reunion in 1993, a new t-shirt seller had to be found. Rod introduced the band to Erik Schunder, who has been running the t-shirt stand since then, together with the actual merchandiser Jens “Yentz” Köhler. Actually, Schunder was only supposed to sell a cry-for-love T-shirt, the proceeds of which were donated to the Antifa group in Bensheim . However, Erik Schunder also helped Yentz, who was often overwhelmed as the sole merchandiser. The idea came up to have the T-shirts and clothing printed by oneself. Then both founded Deutschrock Merchandise GmbH.

To release the album 13 in 1998, the doctors founded the music label Hot Action Records. The trigger was the liquidation of the Metronome, the label of the doctors since it was re-established in 1993. Only records by the doctors are released on Hot Action Records.

The DIE ÄRZTE trademark has been registered in the German trademark register since October 18, 2005 .

Gwendoline

Gwendoline is the band's mascot. The character originally came from a comic book titled The Adventures Of Sweet Gwendoline by John Willie . It is also addressed in the song Sweet Sweet Gwendoline . The motif used by the band is from Schwarwel .

Since 2000 there have been two oversized Gwendolines that border the stage on both sides, especially at open-air concerts. First, however, the commissioned artist had independently designed the figures in color. After playing with these colorful editions at the Hard Pop Days and decorating a houseboat for the Popkomm in Cologne with them, they were recolored in the classic black and white design.
